Exercise Tips for Hot Weather
|
Exercise is possible in hot weather if you have been doing the same exercise such as running and conditioning for a period of time before the hot days begin. It is possible but there are tips to make it beneficial and not hazardous.
Tips for Exercising in hot weather:
Keep hydrated. Drink plenty of water during exercise times when weather is warmer than usual. Also consider snacking on a protein bar or other nutritious snack to keep blood sugar up and to ward off feeling light headed in the heat.
Don’t attempt to start a new exercise program outside in the heat of the day if you have not been previously exercising. It will set you up for feeling weak, over-heated, and failure. If you are used to running a mile, then you are probably okay to keep running your mile in the heat. But if you have been inside on the sofa for the last three months, don’t attempt to run a mile without being in condition.
Even if you are in condition, don’t attempt to do extensive exercise in the heat of the day without stretching and warming up. Teens that are conditioning for school sports should be encouraged to do their work outs in the morning or evening when temperatures may be slightly cooler.
Exercising can be healthy, fun, and good for toning and weight control. Just be cautious during the summer heat so you don’t over do it in the heat of the day. Heat stroke or heat exhaustion are real health problems that can require medical treatment so take care of your health. Seek cooling in an air-conditioned room if you become extremely over heated while exercising and keep hydrated. One more thing, don’t forget the sunscreen if exercising outside. With those tips, you can safely keep it moving during the summer months.
