Automate, Delegate…Celebrate!
|
I recently attended a great marketing conference and read a book that was handed out called Conquer the Chaos. This book was written by two men who founded a software company – after many failed attempts at growing their business. Their software company automates emails and a whole bunch of other things in order to simplify the lives of business men and women.
But the book is much more than just plugging their software. It talks about how we can all eliminate some of these “unnecessary stressors” as I like to call them – the things that we can all automate (or delegate) and get off of our plates. If we could all just take away some of these administrative details, in both work and home life, things would be that much easier.
What are some good tools to automate? If you are on social media, you can use free programs like Hootsuite to automate your social media posts. Yup – schedule them all in advance if possible, and it’ll fire them out all week! Wordpress plug-ins and free programs allow for the automatic posting of blog entries, and a lot of popular email tools even make emailing an automatic process now also.
Automate, delegate…and celebrate!

Marissa Mayer – Does She Have it All?
|
With the new appointment of Marissa Mayer as the CEO of Yahoo, a lot of websites are buzzing. Some experts are saying how women are shattering the glass ceiling (or the glass cliff, as it is referred to by Forbes). A beautiful, smart, and very capable women (who is only 37 I may add) is now the youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 company. She is breaking boundaries, knocking down walls, and kicking butt and taking names.
Interestingly enough, other websites are slamming Marissa Mayer. They feel as if a powerful and successful woman does not need to “ditch home life”, not be home with her children, and work a full time, high-powered job in order to be successful.
I am all for Marissa Mayer as the CEO of Yahoo, personally. But I think the bigger picture point of all of this is that quite simply, success is defined differently for different people. And that is a great lesson for everyone to take with them along their career journey. Whether you are the CEO of a Fortune company, or a mother who is taking a break from the workforce right now – we all have our own definitions of ”career success” and “life success”. What is yours?

Organization is Key
|
Being highly organized is a great trait for any working gal to have. Easier said than done, sure…but an organized woman functions like a well-oiled machine, with all parts working together in harmony, achieving maximum output and efficiency.
Is organization not your strongest suit? Here are a few basic tips to get started:
1) Keep a good calendar. Some people recommend separating your personal and work calendars, but I recommend keeping them together. This way I always know everything that is going on in any given day – not just my work events and functions. I highly recommend Google Calendars (free service, and it syncs to your Gmail and/or mobile device to provide reminders). An old-fashioned agenda works great also!
2) Color-code. Nerdy? Possibly. Effective? Absolutely. I write notes on my calendar and on post it notes on my desk using different colors. This helps me to stay visually organized as well.
3) Automate when possible. There are a lot of great programs out there to help you automate what you can. You can automate emails, blog posts, social media posts, messages, and more. The more you can delegate and automate, the more time you have to focus on other things.

Occupations with the Largest Job Growth
|
A recent article by CNN Money illustrates the 20 Best Jobs for Fast Growth. If you’re stalled or burned out, these fast-growing fields (with relatively low barriers to entry) can help you earn more, get ahead and put life back into your career.
From physical therapy, to IT…and marketing management, to CPA…there is something for everyone. This article is great because not only does it list the median and top salaries, but it also lists the overall “grade” of the position, tips on switching careers, credentials and training/education needed, etc.
I am a firm believer that it is never too late to switch careers. Sure, there are exceptions to that rule…but overall, it is definitely do-able. Perhaps not EASY, but do-able. My first career was actually as a preschool teacher! I loved working with kids, but I knew it ultimately was not what I wanted to do. After a few years of graduate schooling, I was able to discover a rewarding career in marketing and public relations.
If you put your mind to it, you can do anything

Want a Promotion? Take the Initiative!
|
We all want to step up the ladder of success and growth! After getting hired for your first job, you may feel that you are ready for a promotion. Instead of just waiting for good things to happen, you can always take the initiative to take a step forward. Here are some tips that can help you move up to the next level:
- Speak with your superior. Employers want people who are concerned about their career growth so don’t be afraid to speak the matter with your manager or boss. Talk about your own goals and tell your manager that you are looking forward to grow with the company.
- Take on more responsibilities. The best way to show that you are ready to move up the next level is to take on more responsibilities in your workplace. You may volunteer to handle additional tasks or assist other departments.
- Improve your interpersonal skills. Your social skills or your ability to deal with different people in your workplace and to work with a team will surely earn the respects of your colleagues and your superiors. Continue to enhance your communication skills. Effective interpersonal skills will be a major asset as you strive towards career growth.

“Summer Fridays” and Work Ethic
|
We are well into summer, and I recently was in a discussion with a colleague about “Summer Fridays”. ”Summer Fridays” are basically the idea that companies close on Fridays and have a four-day work week in the summer time – for a multitude of reasons, but namely to increase worker morale and productivity. A recent article I read reports data that states that approximately 75% of workers surveyed believed that a “Summer Friday” policy would make them be more productive; however, researchers also stated that supervisors may feel differently (and were not included in the above survey).
My personal opinion? That YES, Summer Fridays are a great idea…and from many vantage points. Firstly, they increase workplace morale and give employees extra incentive to work harder during the four days they are present so they can enjoy their fifth day off…thus also increasing productivity. Some workplaces may even consider this a cost-saving maneuver as well.
I was always a big fan of creating my own “Summer Friday” schedule. My employer never offered this perk, so I always tried to accrue as much vacation time as possible throughout the year, and take as many Fridays (or Mondays) off as I could without compromising the quality of my work. This way I was always feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and I could take a lot of long-weekend trips with my family.
There is something energizing about a four-day work week

Career or Marriage: Do We Need to Choose?
|
Forbes magazine recently discussed an article that was published in the NY Times that posed the question: Does a college education and a career make it harder for a woman to get married?
Previously, yes. But in 2012 – not so much.
Did you know? Of women who graduated from college before 1900, more than three-quarters remained single. As late as 1950, one-third of white female college graduates ages 55 to 59 had never married, compared with only 7 percent of their counterparts without college degrees (statistic from NY Times).
Long gone are the days where women would have to depend on a man for marriage so that she could live her life. Now, women are successful career women who can out-earn their male counterparts (well, in theory). And sure, there certainly are still some men out there who may feel threatened by a powerful woman who can bring home the bacon. But a lot of men are embracing the smart, sexy woman for who she is – someone who can be a great example.

Home Based Business Ideas
|
As a woman who works from home, I truly enjoy what I do. I feel that I have the best of both worlds – a rewarding career, challenging work, yet the flexibility to do it from home. As a mother, this is always an added bonus for me – if my kid is sick or if we have something going on, I don’t have to worry about calling out of the office. Does this arrangement work for everyone? No. But for me, it’s the way to go.
People often ask me for home-based business ideas, and I found a great list that has some good options I had not even considered before! Some of them included:
In-home daycare operator
Personal chef
Internet based work
Consultant
…and much more! To read the article in its entirety, click here.
With technology at its’ peak, the options are endless. I encourage you…if you want to work from home, GO FOR IT. Take the plunge – it will be well worth it!

Highlight Your Achievements: Pinning for Pages on Facebook
|
So everyone is pinning like crazy…on Pinterest. But do you use pinning on Facebook also? Yup, that’s right…you can pin posts on Facebook now, too!
“Pinning” your post means that you are placing that particular post at the top of your Timeline for a period of seven days, unless another item is pinned (you can only pin one item at a time). By pinning a post to the top of the Timeline, it becomes more prominently displayed at the top of all of your information – in addition, Facebook also places a little orange flag in the top right corner to show the world that you have officially pinned this post.
As I have said before, having a Facebook page for your professional self or your business/brand is a great way to help your brand reach new audiences – and grow your career and your reach. But why pin posts? In addition to highlighting important content, you can also use pinned posts as a special call to action, a reminder to your fans, or even a nifty “reminder” to check out your tab panels (fans may need a gentle reminder to check them out under your cover photo with this new Timeline format).
Happy pinning!
