Money Lies that We Tells Ourselves—Installment 2/3
|
Yesterday we started our series on money lies that we seem to tell ourselves repeatedly and that can ultimately contribute to our financial troubles. To refresh yourself on the previous two lies, click here.
Now let’s expose the next two lies:
3.) “I’ll just pay it back later…”—Credit is the ultimate temptation to top them all. It can be just too easy to take money now that we promise to pay back later with the best of intentions. However something happens between now and then—it’s called life. A household appliance breaks down, a medical bill comes in, a car needs repairs…something comes in between us and our good intentions. Sometimes our debt becomes so out of hand that it is hard to handle, and we have to pay down only a portion of it, and in the meantime, we get farther and farther behind. Unless we can be fairly sure that we will be able to pay it off very soon, it is probably better to resist the urge to spend money that we do not have.
4.) “But I have a coupon…”—Coupons are a great invention, but coupons can also make you spend much more than you ever planned to. It may cause you to make an impromptu shopping trip, unplanned purchase, or buy something that you would otherwise never consider just because it is suddenly a “good deal.” Coupons can also lead to unnecessary hoarding of items that you may not need or can lead to overspending. Each time you find a coupon, make sure that it is something that you would purchase even without a coupon (i.e., it is something that you use). Also, because it often takes money to use coupons, make sure that you have the money to be spending, coupon or no coupon. I get a ton of restaurant coupons each month, but I simply do not have money to use them all, in spite of the supposed savings.
Make sure to catch Monday’s post for the final installment of our “Money Lies that We Tell Ourselves” series…
Enjoy your weekend!

Money Lies that We Tells Ourselves—Installment 1/3
|
You hear a lot about spouses lying to each other about money, but sometimes we are not even honest with ourselves about it. In fact, many of us tell ourselves the same few financial lies on a regular basis.
When we experience financial troubles, we may eventually realize that the problem in not necessarily with our income level, but rather that we have been fooling ourselves into believing these same falsehoods over and over again.
Let’s uncover some of these money lies:
1) “It’s just a couple of dollars…”—A couple of dollars may seem minor—that is, until a couple of dollars is the difference between paying your bills or not, or buying the groceries you need, or going negative in your bank account and incurring costly overdraft fees. If you saved just $2 per week over the course of 10 years, it would be over $1,000 saved—small amounts do add up.
2) “I just got paid…”—I love Fridays around where I live because everybody is out and about feeling flush with money. My frugal dad used to laugh at those that would head out on Friday nights to spend all of the money that they just got paid. When you get paid, it is so easy to feel like you are wealthier than you are. But it is good to remember that the money has to last until your next paycheck. I often get around this temptation by immediately paying all bills as soon as a paycheck comes in (even if they are not due for a week or two). The reduced remaining balance that follows is a good enough reminder in and of itself.
To be continued in tomorrow’s post, so be there….

Do You Go for the Gusto in Your Life?
|
Recently Money Magazine posted the following infographic on their Facebook page:
According to the graphic and study that it originated from, men are more likely to take greater risks in investing than women.
We talked in posts last month about determining your own risk tolerance, as well as if being a woman makes you more likely to make money mistakes. But something we have not fully considered is if being a female makes you less likely to take risks. The research states that women are more likely to consider bonds over stocks.
Bonds are considered safer because, in essence, you loan a company money in exchange for a fixed return. Although there is still the risk that an investor will not receive the promised interest at the specified time, generally bonds are considered a more secure investment than a stock.
Stocks involve an investor essentially buying into a company. As the company is either profitable or not, the investor reaps the applicable results. Unlike bonds, there is no scheduled rate of return or repayment date, making stocks more unpredictable and scarier to the risk averse investor.
In general, women tend to be safer drivers and less likely to put their own lives at risk. They also tend to make less rash decisions and are obviously not as driven by testosterone, a thrill-seeking hormone which can cause men in particular to take risks. Women have also found great success as professional money managers in recent years due to their ability to stop, think, and then act versus simply being reactive.
In order to ensure profitability over time, women should consider going for the gusto with calculated investment moves that combine a balance of risk and security. Sometimes a little risk is a good thing, and I think that motto can be applied in all of life, not just regarding investments.
Do you consider yourself less likely to take risks because of your gender?
If you tend to shy away from risk, do you find that it has more to do with other factors besides gender, like personality, financial state, age, etc.?

Are You Raising a Spoiled or Budget-Conscious Child?
|
Recently I read an article that ranked cities across the United States that seem to have the most spoiled and the most budget-conscious children. I found it to be an interesting topic of conversation, as I often complain that children in the U.S. are entirely too spoiled.
Now just to be fair, there are a lot of children living in poverty that need much more than they have access to, but in general, children here are much better off than in some foreign countries. Due to this, I believe that many children grow up without empathy, self-awareness, the desire to help others, and thankfulness for what they do have, because they cannot imagine living without nor do they concern themselves with those that do.
Not that my family and I are wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, but I see the demanding, ungrateful attitude in my own children for the little that they have had. The attitude of entitlement really gets to me, and I often feel that having less can build their character and gratefulness.
I have really strived to keep my kids from being spoiled, but as the article suggests, it is more about a mindset than it is about money. Kids should understand the value of a dollar, that money does not grow on trees, and that it takes hard work to have what you want. They should also be able to distinguish between what is a necessity versus a want, how to be appreciative for whatever they have (even if it is less than they would like), and that they should always think to help others whenever possible.
So, I am interested to know—what tactics do you use to keep your kids from being spoiled? How do you teach them to be frugal and budget-conscious? Do you think it is possible to be wealthy without being spoiled? Inquiring minds want to know your opinion, so make sure to comment below.
To read the article that I referred to, here it is: And the Most Spoiled Kids in the U.S. Live … . What do you think about their findings?

How to Get Your Kids to Do Chores and Teach them the Value of a Dollar
|
As a parent, I know how often that I do things myself rather than deal with the trouble of trying to get my pre-teen kids to do it. However, I have learned that a little trouble saved now does not instill the type of values that kids need to possess as they grow into adults.
Chores can help kids to learn responsibility and that it is important to contribute to a household. Tasks around the house can also prepare them for the workplace when they get older. If you choose to give your kids an allowance or to pay them for completing chores, this also should be an exercise designed to teach them something—in this case, the value of a dollar.
My Job Chart is a free online tool that can assist you in keeping kids on track with chores and managing their earnings from completing their chores. This system adds fun, accountability, and visibility to chores, while also teaching children financial responsibility.
Parents set up a family account, outline jobs for each kid, and designate each job with a point value. Kids can log in to see what chores they must complete and mark them done when finished. They can also manage their earnings, seeing how much that they have and deciding how they want to spend or save their earnings. In addition to saving the money, children can choose to donate their proceeds to charity or use it to purchase rewards set by the parents. When a child redeems a reward, parents can easily order it through the website on Amazon.com.
My Job Chart can simplify your life and teach your kids about how to save, share and spend. A website like this makes delegation of household tasks easy to manage. Kids will love the technological aspect and you will love the extra help around the house.

How to Get Rewarded for Your Savings and Paying Down Your Debt
|
There seems to be a lot of programs out there that reward you for spending money, but not enough that reward you for not doing so. As much as I love purchase-based reward programs, I purposely try not to make unnecessary purchases, and therefore I do not end up getting points as often as I would like.
I was a little suspicious when I first found out about SaveUp, but after receiving an email from my credit union suggesting that I join up, I decided to give it a try. SaveUp is a new free website that rewards you when you save money in your bank accounts and pay down your debt.
You connect your existing financial accounts and it does the monitoring for you. You earn credits every time that you save money or reduce debt, and you use those credits to try your luck at winning cash, merchandise, vacations, and other fabulous prizes. Even when you do not win major prizes, you may earn a few credits for playing.
I have yet to win anything, though I signed up not that long ago and have not been very faithful at trying my luck daily. But it appears that others may be winning all sorts of wonderful rewards. If nothing else, SaveUp is a great way to encourage yourself in positive financial behaviors.
Have you tried SaveUp yet? Have you won anything? We would love to hear from you.

How to Get Your Experian Credit Score for Free
|
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of monitoring your credit on an ongoing basis. I also believe that you should skip costly credit monitoring fees if there are free resources available that can help you to do it yourself.
I have another free credit monitoring tool for you that I personally use in addition to Credit Karma (as mentioned in the last post). As previously stated, Credit Karma provides a variety of scores, but primarily focused on the credit reporting agency TransUnion. Although many lenders and companies that pull credit still rely on TransUnion, I am finding that the other credit reporting bureaus are also gaining in popularity, so it is important to know what your scores with those agencies are as well.
Credit Sesame is another newer website that provides totally free, no obligation credit scores on an ongoing basis. The score is based on Experian, another one of the primary three credit reporting agencies that creditors utilize.
There are many things to love about Credit Sesame:
- It’s FREE!
- You can check your credit score as often as you would like, but the score is only updated once per month
- Your credit score is not affected by your checking it using Credit Sesame
- Credit Sesame provides personalized credit card and other offers based on your credit level
- Credit Sesame sends emails to let you know when your monthly score has been updated and alerts by your request if your score goes under or over a certain number
- Credit Sesame will provide results on whether your credit score went up or down, when the score was last updated, what changes occurred, etc.
- You receive an updated report that states what factors are influencing your credit score, what level of influence each factor has on your credit, and specific tips on what you can do to improve your score in each category
- Credit Sesame users receive a digital badge that can be shared via social media or their website to show their participation on the website. They receive updated badges as they improve their credit level. (FYI—exact credit scores will not be shared and use of these badges are completely optional)
- Credit Sesame users can get rewarded when they invite and get friends to join
Credit Sesame only provides numerical scores and not actual credit reports. But I consider it to be an excellent budget-friendly alternative to expensive credit monitoring services if you want to monitor your credit score on an ongoing basis and be alerted to potential signs of identity fraud. It also allows you to see how different actions like making a payment or using your credit affect your credit score.

How to get Your TransUnion Credit Score for Free
|
So many services and memberships claim to offer a free credit report or credit score, and some do—that is, while you are still under the free trial period, which is normally 30 days. I was sickened by all of the tricky offers out there and after having been burned numerous times, I refused to sign up for any more.
So naturally I was skeptical when I heard about Credit Karma, a totally free online service that offers you ongoing credit monitoring for free with no strings attached. Not only does Credit Karma provide you with your TransRisk credit score, it also provides you with your VantageScore and Auto Insurance scores.
The TransRisk score is essentially your TransUnion credit score. The VantageScore is calculated using a method agreed upon by all three credit bureaus (I think of it as a compilation score). And the Auto Insurance score measures the level of risk that you may pose to a potential insurance company based on your credit report.
There are many things to love about Credit Karma:
- It’s FREE!
- You can check your credit score as often as you would like
- Your credit score is not affected by your checking it using Credit Karma
- Credit Karma provides personalized credit card and other offers based on your credit level
- You can update your Credit Karma score whenever you log in, so it is always up to date
- Credit Karma will provide results on whether your credit score went up or down, when you last checked your score, what changes occurred, etc.
- Credit Karma can send you updates if someone pulls your credit, you have a new account, or if you experience some other major change to your credit
- You receive an updated report card that states what is helping to determine your credit score, what level of influence it has on your credit, and what you can do to improve your score
Credit Karma only provides numerical scores and not actual credit reports. But I consider it to be an excellent budget-friendly alternative to expensive credit monitoring services if you want to monitor your credit score on an ongoing basis and be alerted to potential signs of identity fraud. It also allows you to see how different actions like making a payment or using your credit affects your credit score.

How to Get Business Cards and Custom Printed Products for Free
|
Getting things for free allows me to have or do many things that I otherwise could not afford. One of those is having business cards. I have two sets of business cards—one set that is actually personal cards which have our family contact information on them and the other set is my business cards with my blog information.
I received both of these sets either for free or I only paid shipping. The personal cards are very useful since we just moved, and it helps my spouse and children to remember our contact information. I also send them to family and friends to update them on our information. When I am out and someone asks for my information in a personal or business setting, I can easily produce a card for them to keep.
Vistaprint provides free limited quantities of custom business cards, bumper stickers, car door magnets, checks, pens, invitations/announcements, and more. Whether you are a business owner or not, these free printed products can come in handy.
I have ordered most of their free products and the items are of respectable quality. Vistaprint will normally allow you to order numerous types of free printed products in one order as long as you are willing to cover the reasonable combined shipping cost. It is also a great way to sample the products prior to placing a larger order.
Keep yourself looking organized and put-together with free printed products from Vistaprint—no one has to know that you paid next to nothing. Or if they find out, they may applaud you for being so savvy.

How to Print Your Resume for Free
|
If you are a new college graduate and just getting started on your job search, you will need to have copies of your resume available. You should have printed copies to use when you have to fax or mail to apply for a job. Once you have the chance to interview with a company, you should bring along at least one extra copy of your resume.
As someone familiar with the job search process, this can add up to a lot of resumes to print, which means a great deal of ink and paper. For many people that are just out of college, this may be an extra expense that is outside of their budget.
For the month of June, Cartridge World is offering new college graduates the chance to receive 15-25 one-color copies of their resume for free. Just bring your resume file on a USB flash drive device into your local participating Cartridge World location. All that they ask is that your resume is no more than 2 pages long.
To find out more about this limited time offer, please see their recent press release: Cartridge World Offers Free Resume Printing for New College Graduates.
Even if you are not a graduate yourself, help to ensure a new graduate’s success by passing this post onto your family and friends who could use this free offer.
