What about Wood Alcohol Sounds Good to You?
|
Women in all stages of life worry about their weight. In fact, more diet soda is consumed by women than men because for some reason we feel we are contributing to our health and our weight loss by drinking diet soda rather than a sugary soda. So today I ask you, what about wood alcohol sounds good to you?
Aspartame is one of the ingredients of many popular diet sodas and drinks. But research shows that Aspartame actually turns into a substance in the blood stream similar to wood alcohol. Now not being a chemist, I can’t say for sure but that doesn’t sound healthy. Also not being part of the clinical studies or the politics of why a product that can actually be harmful is still being mass produced, I have to wave to the side of caution and say that women may want to consider the cost to your health in drinking these diet beverages.
At the very least here are some facts. Diet sodas have been linked to weight gain rather than weight loss. It might be an emotional mental issue for us females because we think by drinking a diet soda we then can have a cookie. I am not sure but eating is clearly linked to our minds and our emotions. Diet sodas do contain Aspartame and by doing some quick research, it does appear that Aspartame is on the list of ingredients that can lead to cancer, weight gain, joint pain, and general malaise. Again, doesn’t sound healthy to me.
So here is how you can decide for yourself about diet soda and ingesting anything with Aspartame. Do you research. Find out the facts for yourself and then discuss them with your physician. Look for alternative diet beverages without Aspartame. Drink water.
There are a number of things you can actively do to help your health. If you need a diet soda, drink them in moderation and follow the advice of your health care provider because your health matters.

What is the Process if You Find a Lump in Your breast?
|
Your breast health is a significant concern for all women regardless of age. What is the process if you find a lump in your breast? Here is a quick guideline to help you decide when and how soon to see your doctor.
Rule number one; if you find a lump that is new in either breast get it checked out. Call for an appointment and hopefully within a week of finding the lump you will be examined by your health care provider.
Rule number two: check your breasts at different times during the month to account for hormonal changes due to your menses. Note a change in shape, dimpling, lumps, or drainage and immediately make an appointment if something seems amiss.
When you have found a lump, made your appointment, and gone into concern mode here is what will most likely happen. Your doctor will order a mammogram. Even if you get a yearly mammogram and you find a lump before your next one is scheduled please see your doctor.
Next, depending on the results of your mammogram, you may be scheduled for an ultrasound, biopsy, or consultation with a surgeon. Your doctor may also order other types of diagnostic tests to help decide just what is going on with your body.
The important thing is to follow up as you are told, ask questions, and don’t let your fear of the unknown keep you from finding out what your lump is and what needs to be done about it. It is a matter of your health.

Fresh Foods from the Garden
|
It is a known fact that natural, organic, and fresh fruits and veggies from the farm or your garden may well provide the best nutrients to your diet. Summer is the best time of year to gather those items from local farmer markets and groceries or your very own garden.
Fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and onions are common garden varieties that can easily be grown at home. Those of you who garden have already reaped some of the lettuce products because of the early spring and warm weather we have been having over most of the country. But take a look at what else is readily available at your markets. Fresh veggies and fruits bring many good qualities including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which help to prevent cancer and heart disease.
Asparagus is fresh and actually the season is almost over. Steamed, grilled, or even raw with a dip make a great green veggie for summer. Carrots, beets, celery, and corn on the cob are also summer favorites. How about zucchini and the veggies from the squash family? ( I admit that squash is the last thing on my list as a favorite but many enjoy the varieties grilled or baked.)
Strawberries are also ripe and ready at least in the Midwest. They are one of my favorite fruits of the early summer, followed by blueberries, peaches, and apples. Melons are popular with almost every American I know except myself. Yes I know, I have been told there is something seriously wrong with me because I really HATE watermelon. But I do encourage you to introduce these wonderful fruits to your children. They are filled with vitamins and nutrients that enhance your health.
Take full advantage of all the fresh food items available this summer. Enjoy shopping the farmer’s markets for other items to enhance your diet too like herbs, home grown honey from local bees, and new veggies or fruits you have never tried. It will be good for your health and takes little to know cooking, always a plus for summer dinners.

Cancer.. A Topic Near and Dear to My Heart
|
Cancer is a topic close to my heart. My husband had and survived cancer when our son was five. I have worked with and cared for both adults and children with this disease and I have a published prayer book for adults with cancer. I encourage good health as a way of both prevention and to increase chances of beating this awful disease.
It safe to say that eating a healthy diet and regular exercise can help to prevent cancer but the truth of the matter is that even healthy people get cancer. Children get cancer. Older adults get cancer. BUT it is important to continue a healthy lifestyle regardless of our fears of the disease.
One of the best nutrients to ward off cancer are vegetables, and green veggies seem to have more nutrients to build blood and immunity. Green leafy veggies are a great choice in salads and as a side dish. Broccoli raw and steamed is an excellent choice. I am not fond of veggies but raw and with a low fat dip help me to include this item in my diet.
If you don’t care for veggies either, consider blending them into juices. I have just begun looking into juicing at home but I include V-8 juice at least once a day to increase my chances of getting enough veggies. What do you do to increase your vegetable intake?
PS. French fries don’t count. Just saying. Instead keep a ziplock baggie of cut up carrots, celery, and peppers handy for snacking.

Ideas for detecting and preventing ovarian cancer
|
Of course there is still no method available to detect ovarian cancer in its early stages, but women should be aware of the symptoms and talk to your doctor about it if you suspect something. I have an aunt who has ovarian now and had all the symptoms and told her doctor, but the doctor still didn’t listen. So I suppose you have to be really assertive with your doctor.
Common symptoms:
- Bloating
- Pelvic or abdominal pain
- Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
- Urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency)
- Increased abdominal size (pants getting tighter around waist)
Yes, I know many women have some of the symptoms all the time. But I think its the combination of them and when its on a daily basis for 2 -3 weeks.
To help decrease your chances of developing ovarian cancer, first do the usuals and eat right and exercise. The use of birth control pills can also significantly reduce the chances of getting it. And there are genetic tests available to see if you are at great risk.
Sadly, that’s still the best medicine can do.
