Follow Your Passions for Better Emotional Health
|
Following your passions will improve your overall health especially your emotional health. Those who do follow what it is that they love and makes them happy will have decreased blood pressure, less headaches, be able to maintain their ideal weight with less effort, smile a lot, and report less complaints of physical discomfort or illness then those doing a job they hate.
Following your passion is not always easy. It can be impossible to financially completely give up on those jobs that pay the bills. But it is essential that you include some of your passion in everything that you do with a goal of increasing your time spent on this as the years go by. If you love to take pictures but cannot afford to start a photography business you must still take pictures. Spend time doing that and showing your work to others making the connection that photography is part of who you are. Almost any passion that is reasonable can be woven like a thread into the life you live today.
Identify what your passions are. Make a list of 5 things that you love to do are be around. If you love horses, do you ride or could you volunteer at a stable once a month? If you love to paint could you take a class or take a night a week to just paint?
When you have picked at least one thing that you love to do, start small and begin adding it to your daily or weekly list of things to do. I promise you it will enrich your life and help improve your health.

What Do You Do to Improve Your Health?
|
What do you do when you are too busy to be healthy? That after all is the excuse many of us have for not eating right, not sleeping enough, and not exercising. And how many of us consider our mental and emotional health as part of our health picture?
Consider this. More Americans are taking antidepressants or anti anxiety medications or trying to self medicate with herbal or over the counter medications than any time in the last 40 years. Drug addiction is on the rise for prescription medications as is the use of alcohol to calm the nerves and deal with stress.
This is a stressful time for both men and women in America. But your health must take the front seat to any other concern you have. Your health trumps money, new cars, a new house, or any other tangible item you can mention and this is why.
Without your health, nothing else matters. It is that simple.
So now again I ask you, What do you do to improve your health? It is an important question and today is the time to answer.

Do All Women Need Protection From Sexually Transmitted Diseases?
|
Do all women need protection from sexually transmitted diseases can be a very sensitive subject when discussing women’s health care. There is a fine line between what women need and what their morals affect and it should be a personal decision for every woman. A decision about health protection should not be taken lightly either.
Vaccinations protecting a woman from cervical cancer for instance may be very important for women of any age who are sexually active with different partners. However, a woman who is faithful and is married to the same partner, assuming that partner is also faithful may not be in need of the vaccine that protects against cervical cancer. This is just one example of what a vaccine does to protect a woman and how her personal choices and life style influence what protection she might need.
Birth control methods should not be considered necessarily a protection against a sexually transmitted disease. The birth control pill for instance does not protect a woman against HIV/Aids, chlamydia, or any venereal disease. It protects against pregnancy only.
A woman has many choices about her health and her sexual health should always be at the top of the list when thinking about protection and prevention. Routine pelvic exams and breast exams by a reliable health care provider are an essential part of women’s health. Make it your goal to make your appointment soon if you have not had a check up within the last year. It could mean your health. You can discuss your lifestyle and your concerns about prevention at your appointment so that you are doing all you can to protect your female health.

Vaccines for Adults?
|
Vaccines for adults can be an interesting topic because it seems that there are so many opinions about what to get, which is the right form of a vaccine, and who really needs them?
Tetanus vaccines are given to adults every 10 years or sooner if there is a serious laceration or puncture wound. It is most common now to include pertussis and diphtheria with the tetanus making it a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control to give adults a Tdap booster in place of a plain tetanus shot. The Tdap gives an adult protection from tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis.
Other vaccines recommended for adults include the Chicken pox vaccine, the Flu vaccine, and a pneumonia vaccine. Those adults over 65 are likely to become seriously ill with the flu or pneumonia and more likely to get shingles so this is the clinical information that backs the recommendations. Many adults still refuse to take vaccinations for fear of becoming sick from the shot itself.
Vaccinations can cause aching at the site of injection, a slight fever, and a general feeling of lethargy for a day but the overall protection these vaccinations offer is well worth that one day of feeling punk. Speak with your health care provider for more information and to understand your risk for certain illnesses. Make an informed decision about taking adult vaccinations rather than opting to just not do it. Here is to a healthy winter for all of us.

Have a Healthy Weekend
|
Plan for a healthy and fun weekend. Try a new physical activity..maybe a hike or a canoe ride. Try biking
, swimming,or jogging in a new place. Look for signs of fall like changing leaves. Visit an antique mall, shop for a new fall jacket, or make carmel apples. The idea is to do a relaxing and fun activity that includes exercise and healthy foods. Relaxation and healthy fun will reduce stress and blood pressure. It also promotes a positive attitude and makes for a good start to Monday morning. HAPPY WEEKEND. ENJOY.

Appropriate Beverages for Dehydration
|
Fall is almost here and the winter cold and flu season will follow. It is important as flu season approaches that you understand the benefits of what to drink to keep hydrated during a bout with the flu.
Soda and Caffeine are not good choices, nor is coffee. These drinks can make dehydration worse. While they may be the beverage that tastes the best during an illness, don’t rely on them to provide you with the fluids you need to recover. Instead choose beverages that also supply electrolytes and nutrients.
Choose broth, plain water, juices, Gatorade or Pedialyte electrolyte solutions, protein shakes, and more water. Plain water is best absorbed when you are dehydrated but it has little taste appeal. Adding powder flavoring is a plus and so is adding juices and the other named beverages to the mix.
Another way to get fluids into your system during a flu bout is by sucking on Popsicles. They have some flavor, are cool and soothing to a healing throat, and are well absorbed even if you have been vomiting.
To make sure that the fluids you take in stay in, sip or suck slowly. Much of the fluid can be absorbed through the blood vessels in your mouth and tongue before you even swallow. Sucking on ice chips is another source of fluid intake during illness for this very reason. Avoid drinking large amounts that will lead to bloating or vomiting. Small sips at a time are better for you and will increase your chances of returning to a hydrated state quickly.

Medicare: The Truth
|
Many readers may be confused about Medicare and some who are not near the age of 65 should be more concerned then those who are over 55. Here is the reason why. Those over 55 will most likely not be affected by any changes made to the current Medicare system and at the appropriate age will be able to apply for and receive benefits.
Those of you 55 or younger are another story, and it doesn’t matter who gets elected. It matters what they do with the system once they are in office. As the Medicare program stands right this minute… no money for those who turn 65 fifteen years from now. That is a problem.
What can you do? Actually you can do several things now to improve your over all health care later when you reach 65 years old.
1. Eat well, exercise, and take care of your health.
2. Invest in a retirement health program or insurance benefit, buy supplemental policies, or begin putting money into your own savings account for health related care later.
3. Vote, but make certain you know what each candidate stands for in writing, not by the wording others repeat. You can research on the government websites exactly what the bills about Medicare really state and what it means for you at your current age. Be an informed voter, not one who listens to others without doing some research.
4. Discuss your concerns with your health care provider and with your health insurance agent. They are both educated about current issues because it directly affects how they pay out or are reimbursed. If you don’t get the answers you want there, call your local hospital and ask to speak to someone in billing or to a patient advocate.
It is important to be prepared for retirement in more ways than your social security income or where you want to vacation. Research and be prepared for your health care as you reach retirement age so you will not be caught without appropriate health care coverage.

Walking is Exercise
|
I am here as a witness that walking is exercise. I don’t mean just the walk to the fridge for a snack, I mean walking the block, walking the dog, and walking pulling a wagon. It is all exercise.
Get a pedometer and attach it to your waistband and count your steps. The average person may walk 5-8 thousand steps in a day. If you work up to 10,000 steps a day you will have improved your overall heart health. Here are ways to help make your walk a better form of exercise.
1. Walk further everyday. Park away from the doorway to your office, away from the entrance to the store, and down the block from your neighbors when you go for a quick visit. Make yourself walk and increase those steps everyday.
2. Walk in areas where you can challenge yourself. Hills, walking trails, up and down stairs, or walking with ankle weights are all ways to challenge your exercise program when it only involves walking.
3. Walking the dog on a short lease gives you a resistance as you walk especially if the dog is large. Shorten the lease as the dog picks up speed and your arms will benefit from exercise as you are walking.
4. Pulling the grand kids in a wagon rather than pushing a stroller will give your upper arms a chance to get stronger. Be careful to change arms and to avoid twisting your back into an uncomfortable position which may cause more harm than good.
Walking costs nothing but the effort to do it. Since my relocation to an area of hills and few level walking paths I have noticed that buttocks tightening and the thighs getting stronger. It is still a struggle but I am walking more everyday and feeling a change in my overall health. Try walking in your area for 6 weeks and see if you don’t feel a difference in both your energy and your breathing. Let me know how you do.

Swimming As Exercise
|
Walking is free and a wonderful cardiovascular exercise but often women look for some other way to get fit. Many don’t like running because of possible knee problems but those who cannot run or jog may look into swimming. Swimming can be a wonderful way to exercise and can be done indoors all year long.
Swimming laps or doing exercises in place can offer good cardiovascular effects and can also be easier on joints because of the water. Water exercise is less painful for joints and muscles while giving resistance and making exercise effective.
Local YMCA’s often have a community pool. If you don’t have a community indoor pool, check with your local high school. Many times local high schools offer open swim nights for adults or even exercise times for adults. If either of those choices don’t work, check out health clubs in your area. Some health clubs that offer physical therapists and rehabilitation services also have a pool.
If you are lucky enough to have a basement or live in an area where you can have a pool year round, lap pools may be your choice. A lap pool for a basement can be as affordable as a hot tub and the advantages of having your exercise pool at home can be priceless if it increases your endurance and improves the way your joints and muscles feel.
If other types of exercise don’t appeal to you, try to find a pool Swimming is great exercise for your bones, muscles, and your heart.
