Water, The Essential to Life.
|
Water is essential to life, all life. Water is necessary for the plants, the food we grow and eat, the animals on the planet, and to a healthy body. It is what makes up more than half of the contents in a living cell. Understanding the essence of what water means to all kinds of life makes it imperative that we are careful with this golden resource.
While we need to protect our environment and avoid wasting water with long showers etc, we must also remember to drink plenty of the clear stuff ourselves. Hydration during the heat of the summer is the most important rule to keeping healthy and avoiding the pitfalls of dehydration or heat stroke. But can you have too much water?
The answer to that question is YES. So without giving details that would involve chemistry ( and I detest chemistry) let me just say drinking cool/cold water on a hot day is great BUT you must also eat. Plain water is devoid of electrolytes and minerals or vitamins. You can have physical symptoms if you drink gallons of clear water and do not eat. Including drinks like Gatorade or vitamin water can help. Eating fresh fruit and veggies will also help. Include nuts like walnuts or almonds for added nutrition, but just remember to eat something along with drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day.
Consult with your doctor or health care provider if you have questions about what is the best beverage in addition to water for you or your family in the heat of the summer.

What About Those Fat Eliminator Drugs?
|
How many times do you see a commercial for one of those drugs that eliminates fat and you don’t have to change a thing about your dietary intake or your exercise? Have any of you tried these medications?
First, I would advise not to believe everything you hear. Second, someone will always say it worked for them but that doesn’t mean it will work for you and it doesn’t mean it is safe for you and your particular health state. And third, you cannot maintain weight loss and reach your ideal weight without a change in behavior because it simply won’t last.
I would also advise that you would consult with your health care provider before starting any over the counter fat eliminator drugs. These drugs give you very loose stools and may give you abdominal cramps. This is how the fat is eliminated from your body. The drugs bind with the fat and help you excrete it but that doesn’t necessarily mean you are loosing weight in a healthy way. You still need to eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, and exercise.
If you choose to take a fat eliminating drug, please educate your self about the medication, speak with your doctor, and don’t expect miracles. Weight loss takes time and effort to make it a healthy and permanent choice.

Juicing and Health
|
I am encouraging those of you who can to juice once a day. If you don’t have a juicer, than opt for a big serving of fresh fruit but take advantage of the vitamins and antioxidants in fresh fruit during this season.
Montel Williams has a juicer he recommends called the HealthMaster. It looks pretty amazing but I haven’t tried ours yet. However, I know you can get the same minerals and vitamins by eating fresh fruit, veggies, and including them in meals and snacks.
There are juicers that let you grind the peelings with the meat of the fruit, and while those are probably equally good for you, I for one can’t do the peels. I love the meat of fruits but the peels are often bitter and I am never certain if I have rinsed them enough. Just my thoughts though so do what you are comfortable with.
The important thing to do is to include fresh items in your diet. There is no better way to get the anti- cancer affects of food than by eating fresh. Vitamins and minerals are more natural in fresh fruit and veggies than in any other form and your body eats that natural ingredient up and is able to use every single ounce of that for energy. The processed and artificial forms of vitamins and minerals are not so easily used by our bodies.
Think and eat fresh. Think and eat as much as you can of non-processed foods with additives and chemicals or dyes. Don’t get radical about it but be conscious of it when you make your food choices. I am feeling 100 percent better myself by using the herbs and seasonings from Wildtree. I am amazed at the difference in how things taste without the additional fillers etc that some put into their foods.
Live well, Live healthy.

Mental Stress and Physical Symptoms
|
Most of you know that I have been relocating the last week-end and up until tomorrow. A week of 100 degree temps, moving heavy boxes, unpacking, looking for missing items, finding the money to pay for all of the gas, the movers, the snacks for those helping, and moving our dogs and cats has added up to one big mental stress event even though the move is a dream.
I say this to bring to your attention your own mental health. Stress leads to physical symptoms which might include stomach upset, headaches, body aches, and intestinal issues. Mental stress in the most minor sense of the word can still add up to physical symptoms. There is a way to deal with minor mental stress without alcohol or drugs. Here are a few tips:
1. Take 5. Take 5 minutes to yourself to close your eyes and regroup. Mentally take a vacation for 5 minutes. Visualize the job or the issue resolved and the steps you are taking to get there.
2. Take 5. Take 5 long deep breathes to clear your head , relax your muscles, and give your body the needed oxygen that you don’t supply by being a lunatic running around like a mad woman. Take deep breaths and hold them for a few seconds and relax.
3. Take 5. Take 5 snack breaks during the day of a stressful event or problem. A piece of fruit, dark chocolate, a hot cup of tea, or a cold drink of water throughout the day will help to rejuvenate you and give you energy. Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol, and don’t smoke. These added chemicals only work to increase your stress response in your body and actually work against you.
4. Take 5. Take a 5 minute power nap. Close your eyes whether you are in the bathroom, in the parking lot at work, or at home take 5 minutes to close your eyes. Naps work wonders for restoring your body during stressful times. The issues you are dealing with will wait 5 minutes, trust me. And your overall health is vital.
Remembering to take 5 for your health. Even though you may not be able to eliminate the stress, you can learn to deal with it because it too will pass.

Health Considerations When Relocating
|
My husband and I are relocating 3 hours south of where we live now. During this process several health considerations have come into play and made me realize that others may have need for quick reminders of these same tips.
My husband got a job promotion which required him to move into our new house sooner than we had planned. Enter a tooth ache, need for a root canal, and current prescriptions needing refills because time got away.
Tip number one: check all prescriptions and have enough refills for a month allowing time to find a physician in your new location.
Tip number two: Get a local phone book and make initial appointments with dentists, physicians, or eye doctors before you need one. At the very least, have the numbers of each so you can call and find out if they take new patients.
Tip number three: Create a box, bag, or carrier with your medications and first aide supplies to keep handy during the move. Keep it with you or in your vehicle. It is not fun to need a band-aid and have the box of band-aids be at the other house. Same goes for the anti-inflammatory medications that you will need for muscle pain after making the move.
Tip number four: Have all insurance cards, medication lists, allergy lists, and list of medical diagnosis for all members of the family in a safe place and available during the move in case you need it in a hurry. Your medical history should include past surgeries, last tetanus shot, and any daily medications you take.
Be prepared. Locate physicians, hospital, and dentists before you need them. Make a dry run to find these places so you are not in a tizzy when you really need to get there in a hurry.
Moving is stressful and takes mental and physical effort to make it run smoothly. Being prepared with your prescriptions and handy numbers of those services that you might need in an emergency will take one stressful thing off your mind.

Americans are Living Longer
|
Americans are living longer. That fact alone is encouraging but it brings with it some challenges as well. If you live longer, it is important to stay as healthy as possible so longevity can be enjoyed. Here are somethings to consider to keep living longer.
1. Keep you mind and body active. It is important to continue to find things that you enjoy doing as you age. Those activities will change as your physical abilities change and that can be challenging, but it is important to keep interested and passionate about those things you love to do.
2. Keep your teeth in good shape. Dental health is important to your health as you age. Poor dental health affects diet, nutrition, immunity, and mental attitude. Keep your mouth healthy to increase your chances of a long life.
3. Keep making friends and stay in touch with family. As you age it is probable that you will loose friends to life changes, relocation, and even death. It is important to keep making friends and creating a social network for your mental health as well as your physical health. Those with a good social network tend to stay more physically active, participate in outside interests, and maintain a good mental attitude as they age.
4. Pay attention to diet, exercise, and your body. Seek medical attention when you suspect there may be a symptom you cannot explain. Being proactive with your medical needs will increase your chances of discovering medical issues early for early treatments.
It is an awesome thought to live as long as possible but it is even more important to be able to feel healthy so you can participate and fill your life purpose while enjoying family and friends.

Hair Loss
|
Are you experiencing hair loss? Does your hair feel thinner or drier, making you worry that something is wrong? There are a number of reasons for thinning hair and some of them are related to health.
Normal hair loss occurs daily for all people. We loose about 100 hairs a day from shampooing, brushing or combing, and from the overall cycle of hair growth and regression. Hair also thins with age. Men experience hair thinning around the temples and forehead. Women most often notice thinning on top and at the crown of the head.
Patchy bald areas can be the result of stress, skin infection, or medical condition. Patchy bald areas or extreme loss of hair in clumps without a reason should be investigated by your physician.
Those with cancer or other medical condition requiring medical treatments that compromise the immune system may experience hair loss in clumps or patches as part of their treatments. This hair often returns when the treatments end.
Normal hair loss is not a problem for most people. Any abnormal or extreme loss of hair that cannot be attributed to a medical treatment should be investigated by your physician to rule out autoimmune conditions or other health problems that may be the cause.
Over treatment of your hair from dyes or perms may need to be avoided for a time to help your hair restore it’s natural health. Eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water can also help to improve the overall quality of your hair. Your hair can be a sign of your health so it is prudent to pay attention to the quality of your hair and the feel and texture. Seek a medical opinion if you are concerned.

Exercise at Home
|
Exercising for some during this hot weather has become difficult unless you have equipment or time at home. It is possible to have a worthy exercise routine at home inside with the air conditioner running and without spending a ton of money. Exercise equipment comes in all sizes and price ranges for your convenience, it is a matter of getting up and doing it.
Here are some ideas.
1. Use 1 pound cans of beans for weights. Hold one can in each hand as you do arm lifts, walking in place, working on a treadmill, or sitting in a chair.
2. Purchase an exercise ball. These balls run about 10.00 and can be found at most discount stores including Walmart, K-mart, or Target. They offer many easy to do strengthening exercises that help with overall muscle tone and balance and it is easy to do inside where it is cool.
3. Treadmills are an alternative to walking outside in the heat but they can be expensive. Shop around for the best deal and for a treadmill that will suit your needs.
4. A stationary bicycle can offer a great cardio work out inside away from the hot son. These bikes run anywhere from 200.00 dollars up but you can often find a used one in your local paper. A stationary bike offers a great way to strengthen leg muscles, increase heart rate, and increase balance right from the comfort of your home.
These are just a few ways to continue your exercise routine when the outside heat is too much and when you are short on time. Don’t let weather or time keep you from doing what is good for your health.

|
It can be hard to make big changes to your diet for a healthier you. Making smaller changes in tiny increments will make those changes less drastic and more likely to be permanent. Here are some small changes you can begin to make in improving your diet and your health.
1. Decrease the amount of salt you take in. Read labels and choose items with less sodium content. Don’t add additional salt to items.
2. Decrease the amount of sugar you take in. Reduce sugary drinks. Decrease the amount of sugar you sprinkle on fruit or cereal. After you begin using less, consider substituting with a natural sweetener or substitute. There are many natural substitutes that work well decreasing your risk for diabetes.
3. Avoid fried foods or opt for a product like grape-seed oil as an oil substitute when frying. You get the same great result but without the risks that other oils carry. Grape-seed oil products can be found through companies like Wildtree.
4. Add more fruits and vegetables to you daily diet. Fruits and veggies can be added in smoothies, as raw snacks, or chopped in salads or sauces.

Happy Monday-Almost time for school?
|
Happy Monday. It is so hard to believe that school will be starting soon. While you enjoy the rest of your summer with your kids, now is the time to start planning for the health and safety of your child during the school year. Here are a few tips to get you started for a fun, safe, and healthy school year beginning now.
1. Make dental appointments for your children now. Good oral health will help your child’s immunity and overall state of health. Making appointments during the summer helps to avoid missing valuable school time for routine cleaning appointments during the school year.
2. Get your child a complete physical. Discuss your child’s overall health, behavior, eating habits, and ideal weight with your physician. Discussing your child’s health is an important part of keeping your child healthy and active.
3. Get immunizations up to date. Be clear on what is due and what is expected from your school system. Discuss those recommended vaccines such as Chicken pox vaccine or the vaccine to prevent sexually transmitted diseases with your physician so you can make an educated decision about what is best for your child.
4. Purchase and provide the medications that you want the school to dispense ahead of time. Have tylenol or allergy medications labelled as the school requests and have parental notes written far in advance so there is no lapse in what can be provided for your children in the case of pain or allergy symptoms.
5. Make a current list of emergency contacts for your child. Things change from school year to school year so make certain that your list is up to date with current cell phone numbers and contact information.
6. Update a list of allergies, medical conditions, or daily medications that your child takes. Doing this ahead of time helps you to avoid missing something important in the haste of school registration.
These simple steps taken before the school year begins assures a smooth start to the new school year.
