What Kind of Life Can You Have by Living Longer?
|
Women may not consider getting older until they actually reach an older age simply because many are too busy taking care of others to notice. Age kind of creeps up and then one day you don’t recognize the woman in the mirror. That is unless you have prepared for your longevity.
If you are planning and preparing for a long and happy life there are several things you might consider other than the money factor. Money of course should be part of your overall plan for a good life in later years. But there are many other things to consider.
First lets look at overall health. Women who want to live long, look good, and feel well must take care of their health from a young age. Eating right helps. Exercising is essential. Maintaining an average weight adds to a more healthy body, and avoiding vices like smoking, drinking too much, doing anything that could be misunderstood as drug abuse is an absolute must. Having a positive outlook on life in general improves health and longevity as does having a purpose.
Second, taking care of your mental and emotional health will add years onto your life. Seeking treatment for depression and for symptoms of irritability and moodiness that interferes with your daily life can go a long way to keeping you mentally fit and well. Hobbies, friendships, volunteer work, raising children, pursuing a career, and following your passions are part of nurturing your mental and emotional health.
Lastly, nurture your spirituality. The whole you must be well so that the longer you live the more purpose you still have and the more interest you have in daily living. Once you loose some of your health to illness or conditions, your spirituality can continue to help you. Attitude and a strong faith will guide you to reach beyond an illness and still find interest and fun in your life.
As you age, find solace in nurturing your mind, your body, and your spirit. These are the intangible gifts of a happy life that are unrelated to money, status, the degrees behind your name or outward appearances. The gifts of mind, body, and spirit are the measure of your soul, your purpose, and the depth of your relationships with others. If tended throughout the years, they lead to not only longevity but to a contentment with age that satisfies the heart.

Thursday is the Vote on the Government’s Health plan
|
Thursday the Supreme court will rule on whether the Government’s idea of healthcare for everyone is constitutional. Politics, religion, and the economy are all tough topics with no single or easy solution so the vote tomorrow will be important to all Americans.
Regardless of how you feel about the proposed healthcare plan, religion, or politics there are some facts that cannot be altered.
1. We will all become ill with some kind of disease before we die.
2. We will all die.
3. We will all need to see a physician at some point in our lives.
4. We all will be financially responsible for our care in some way.
5. We can all help the situation by preventing some kinds of diseases and illness when we maintain a healthy weight, we don’t smoke, and when we keep our bodies moving our joints and muscles do not degenerate or age as quickly.
It is a personal choice about how proactive you are in the state of your health. Take a moment to be greatful for the state of your health today and for the choices you have to improve and protect that healthy state. The

Choosing a Treadmill?
|
Treadmills are a great piece of exercise equipment for those who love walking or running in place as their form of exercise. A good treadmill can offer a great cardio workout and may give you the challenge you need to move to the next level of physical training. But are there any specific things to look for when going to purchase a treadmill?
There is more than the brand name to consider when buying a treadmill. Brand names may give the impression that your work out will be more superior than that of a lesser known named piece of equipment but that should not be your first thing consider. The major things to consider are safety and machine performance.
Your physical safety is a must during and after exercising whether running outside or in place on your treadmill. A good treadmill will have several speeds and a SAFETY key to stop the machine in an emergency. An emergency might include an untied shoelace, loosing your balance, tripping and falling to your knees, or becoming short of breath and needing to stop now. The advantage of different speeds with your treadmill will allow you to work up to your own pace while still maintaining a daily exercise routine. Some users never work up to the fastest speed yet have a wonderful workout for a longer period of time using a slower speed.
Besides having an emergency safety key or turn off button, your treadmill should run smoothly. You cannot obtain a rhythm of walking or running without a smooth running belt and motor. The treadmill belt cannot run like a rusty old car, but should glide smoothly to avoid injury to ankles, knees, and hips.
The treadmill you choose must be able to hold your weight limit so there is no bending or unbalance of the machine and it must be sturdy enough for running in place without falling.
Added features may include a digital calorie counter, mile counter, timer, and digital heart rate counter. Sturdy handles to grip if you choose to hold on while running is another safety item to check out. And then there is pricing. Depending on your budget and your physical needs, treadmills come in all sizes and price ranges. Do your homework and shop around. Ask questions of your sports equipment dealer including maintenance instructions and care.
Choosing a treadmill is a personal choice but you can make an educated purchase when you are well informed.

Can You Find Nutrition in Baked Goods?
|
We all know that good nutrients can be found in fresh fruit and veggies, meats and cheeses, and many organically grown items. But can you find any worthwhile nutrients in baked goods? As a lover of muffins, cakes, and cookies I can say YES you can.
Baking with wheat flour, less sugar, the right type of fat, and egg whites rather than whole eggs can render a baked item healthier for the consumer. Adding bran, flax seed, fresh fruits like cranberries or blueberries, and by decreasing the amount of fat added makes a tasty baked good if you have the right recipe. Muffins are a good baked item to practice making those healthy changes or substitutions because the recipes tend to make small batches.
Another protein to add to a baked item is to add nuts and sunflower seeds. Nuts can add texture, flavor, color, and nutrients to muffins, pancakes, cakes, cupcakes, or breakfast casseroles. Applesauce can be substituted for oil or margarine to add moisture in a baked goods recipe too. There are endless ways to change a recipe to make it more nutritious and healthy.
Ideas for homemade nutritious baked goods:
1. granola bars
2. muffins with fruit or bran
3. cookies baked with less sugar and nuts or oatmeal added
4. cake without frosting and sprinkled with nuts instead. ( substitute some of the oil with applesauce and increase the nutritional value)
It is possible to enjoy baked goods and still find some nutritional value within. There are some commercial products like cookies with a serving of veggies mixed in, 100 calorie cookie bags, protein and fiber brownie bars, 90 calorie fruit or granola bars, and the list goes on.
Check the sugar content, the salt content, and the overall calorie content on baked goods purchased at your grocery. Moderation is the key for most people, but if you must have those baked goods, try some that have added fiber, protein, or vitamins for a jump start on a healthier snack.
Anyone care to share a great healthy recipe for baked goods or give us your ideas on adding more nutrition to the cakes and such that we all love?

Fire Safety at Home
|
There are drought like conditions in more than half of the states in the United States. That may not mean much unless you are directly affected by a current forest fire but with the Fourth of July just around the corner home fires and safety for families is an important consideration.
Fireworks can cause not only fires especially in drought affected areas but they also offer a safety concern for families with children or teens. The ramifications of sparklers, bottle rockets, discarded matches, and any fireworks display done in your backyard may initiate the sparks that can start a brush fire quite easily.
Tips to prevent fire and promote safety during a fireworks display:
1. Make sure there are adults supervising any sparklers, matches, or fireworks even if you think there is no need to worry. Any type of fireworks material requiring matches or a lighter has the potential to cause a fire, cause a burn, or to backfire and possible cause an injury. Hand and eye injuries are common with home fireworks displays even with the best of caution.
2. Have a metal or nonflammable container for matches, old sparklers, and the resulting trash from a backyard display. Don’t touch these items until they have been cooled with water or until they have been on the ground and cooled naturally. In the dark, it may be hard to tell if debris is hot or could re-ignite. Use caution when cleaning up debris.
3. Adults should be supervising any and all children and teens who are around a backyard fireworks display. Do not leave small children unattended before, during , or after your display. Do not leave matches or lighters within reach of smaller children and keep a hose or water bucket handy for emergencies.
4. Fireworks aside, brush fires and local woods can easily catch on fire without precautions. Don’t flick your match or smoke out the car window or burn trash, have a camp fire, or roast marshmallows outside of a fireproof fire ring. Make a clearing around your campfire or burn pile so sparks cannot travel to dry grassy areas.
5. Keep a shovel and water source close at hand if burning anything outside in areas where there has been little rain. Last but not least, avoid burning on a day with a strong breeze or wind.
Summer is hot enough but when conditions are such that there has been little or no rain, drought like conditions prevail. Practice fire safety at home and during holidays to prevent burns, injuries, or property destruction by fire. Keeping everyone safe during these times should be the safety goal of everyone in the family so begin by teaching children about fire safety and what to do in an emergency.

How Long Do You Want Live?
|
Have you thought about how long you want to live? Longevity has increased for women and we generally have 5-7 years longer than our male counter-parts but most of us don’t even want to think about how long we have here on earth. We also don’t want to think about what our health status might be as we age because it can be down right depressing.
Poor eyesight, dementia, pain, weakness, inabilities to do the things we love to do, bladder control issues, disease and illness are some of the health issues that can accompany growing old and none of us wants to become a burden. The trouble is, aging will occur and we don’t plan ahead for it. Here are some of the things we can do to prepare for our longevity that may even improve our life.
1. Eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight.
2. Stop smoking now.
3. Be proactive in getting medical check ups so any disease or illness can be dealt with promptly.
4. Exercise and keep active both physically and mentally.
5. Make friendships. Friends and family bring joy and can help to keep you mentally and physically feeling better as you age.
6. Pursue your dreams. Art, writing, quilting, photography, nature, music, and thousands of other hobbies and activities or interests can keep your mind active and your heart full. Having distractions like a hobby or passion can help you through the inevitable sadness that comes with life.
These things will not stop you from aging but they can go a long way in making your longevity healthy and happy. What are you doing to prepare for aging and your future?

New Test Coming to Diagnose Alzheimer’s Disease.
|
The news about a scan that can diagnose Alzheimer’s disease before death is awesome news for those who may wonder if a loved one has the disease. This is a welcome relief for some but with the news brings ethical and emotional consequences too.
Would you have the scan to discover if you had the disease, especially since it is a disease that has no cure? That will be the ethical question that some will raise. On the other hand, if you or a family member had odd symptoms that might be early signs of Alzheimer’s disease I can see the benefits of knowing for sure. Benefits include planning for your estate, keeping active and being proactive with possible clinical trials, mind exercises, and other possible adjuncts that could prolong the deterioration that Alzheimer’s brings.
There are many sides to the new scan becoming available. The cost and who will cover it, the affects on employment for those with a positive scan, the fear of the unknown and what is to come, and where the test will be available and to whom are all questions that come to mind.
The fact the research has come this far that a diagnosis may be available to the general public is medical progress at it’s best. Time will tell who, what, where, and how but for now I am glad that medical research is making the hope of diagnosis a reality for some. May a cure not be far behind.

Exercise Tips for Hot Weather
|
Exercise is possible in hot weather if you have been doing the same exercise such as running and conditioning for a period of time before the hot days begin. It is possible but there are tips to make it beneficial and not hazardous.
Tips for Exercising in hot weather:
Keep hydrated. Drink plenty of water during exercise times when weather is warmer than usual. Also consider snacking on a protein bar or other nutritious snack to keep blood sugar up and to ward off feeling light headed in the heat.
Don’t attempt to start a new exercise program outside in the heat of the day if you have not been previously exercising. It will set you up for feeling weak, over-heated, and failure. If you are used to running a mile, then you are probably okay to keep running your mile in the heat. But if you have been inside on the sofa for the last three months, don’t attempt to run a mile without being in condition.
Even if you are in condition, don’t attempt to do extensive exercise in the heat of the day without stretching and warming up. Teens that are conditioning for school sports should be encouraged to do their work outs in the morning or evening when temperatures may be slightly cooler.
Exercising can be healthy, fun, and good for toning and weight control. Just be cautious during the summer heat so you don’t over do it in the heat of the day. Heat stroke or heat exhaustion are real health problems that can require medical treatment so take care of your health. Seek cooling in an air-conditioned room if you become extremely over heated while exercising and keep hydrated. One more thing, don’t forget the sunscreen if exercising outside. With those tips, you can safely keep it moving during the summer months.

Is Nutrition or Cost Your Guiding Light?
|
How do you choose food for your family and for yourself? Are you guided by the nutrition offered by the food items or are you on a tight budget, a fast paced lifestyle, and meals are on the go so cost and time are your guiding light to the menu?
The million dollar question becomes this. Can you eat nutritious foods and spend less? Less time, less money, and less ingredients with more nutritional value to each meal…. and how do you do it?
Many times snacking on fresh foods like grapes, carrots, apples, green pepper strips, or strawberries can be both nutritious and satisfying. It can be priced reasonably especially in the summer so take full advantage of these months. Compare the price of a snack bar with high carbohydrate content to the price of a bunch of grapes and you may find fruit can actually be cheaper.
Meals don’t have to be complicated either especially at this time of year. Grilling is easy and meat and veggies can be grilled for a simple meal. Consider fresh fruit or a salad for the side dish rather than making several other dishes. A grilled burger, salad, and apple slices make a nutritious meal and a reasonable cost without spending hours in the kitchen after a long day.
Tips:
Pick foods in season. Shop sales for your meat. Simplify side dishes. Avoid packaged foods that can be high in salt, carbs, and calories.
Feel free to share your ideas for preparing and eating nutritious foods for less. We would love to hear your meal ideas.

Organizing Posts
|
I am going to make an attempt at organizing posts on the health and fitness blog so that on each day of the week you can roughly expect a certain topic. Hopefully this will give you more direction in searching for information and me more direction in getting the most current information and opinions out there.
This blog is for general information and thought provoking health and fitness ideas, not to promote one way over another on any topic. Health and fitness are important for women today but no one idea is perfect for everyone nor do any points made here take the place of information given to you by your doctor.
With that being said, this is my plan.
MONDAY: Home and Family safety.
TUESDAY: Nutrition
WEDNESDAY: Exercise and Fitness
THURSDAY: General health news and research, disease prevention, and current trends,
FRIDAY: Longevity
So how does that sound? I am open to ideas and welcome suggestions for any topic. There are always new research, fun recipes, exercise ideas, and endless topics to cover on health and fitness. Hopefully we can keep you reading here for all of those reasons.
Today’s Home and Safety statement is a simple one. KEEP YOU CHILDREN SAFE AROUND THE SWIMMING POOL. Lock gates, remove ladders, lock the screen doors, and keep an eye on toddlers. There have already been several near drownings in family pools throughout the United States and it isn’t officially summer yet. Young children do not understand the danger of water, ponds, pools, or hot tubs so it is essential that parents and adults are vigilant in keeping children safe around water.
