Green Cleaning: 7 Uses For Toothpaste Other Than Brushing Your Teeth
|
Toothpaste has so many more uses than just brushing your teeth. the paste and not the gel kind acts as an abrasive so it is perfect for the odd job around the house. Here are 7 great other uses for toothpaste:
- Crayon on Painted Walls : a little toothpaste on a damp cloth will take that artwork right off your walls. Rinse with a wet cloth and your done.
- Carpet Stains: use an abrasive brush and toothpaste, scrub the stain, and wipe with damp cloth.
- Stained Clothes: put toothpaste on stain, rub fabric together, and then rinse. You may have to do this a couple of times and it may not work on all fabrics.
- Baby Bottles: if your baby’s bottles are getting that sour milk smell then use a little toothpaste and a bottle brush. Make sure you rinse really well.
- Your Nails: your finger and toe nails are made of the same thing as your teeth so a little whitening toothpaste will clean them right up.
- Coffee Tables: got water rings on your coffee tables? Simply rub some toothpaste into the mark with a soft cloth and wipe dry with a clean damp cloth.
- Leather Shoes: take scuff marks off your leather shoes. Put a dab on the scuff, rub in with a soft cloth, and rinse with a damp cloth.

The Clean Up Game
|
Getting children to help you clean up can be a chore all unto its self. I found that making it fun can make the kids want to do it, Here are a few of my tips for getting your kids to help clean:
- Set a timer. See who can get the most toys put away by the time the bell dings. I usually give a small reward to whoever wins this game. My children race around and LOVE it.
- Customize their storage boxes. Each of children have a box in the living room that they themselves decorated. They have to put any toys, shoes, etc that need to go to the bedroom in this box at the end of the day. This makes getting the items in their correct place easier for me.Anything not in the box and found in the living room I put into the donation box. I tell them if they don’t care enough to pick it up then they don’t really want or need it.
- Let them spray. I have them help with wiping things down I put a teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in warm water in a spray bottle and let them go to town cleaning the table or whatever. It’ll clean just about anything without ruining it.

Home and House Ideas: Cornmeal as Carpet Cleaner
|
Who knew there was so many uses for cornmeal? Besides making some great cornbread it is also a natural carpet cleaner. Using it is very easy and doesn’t take a lot of effort. For small stains mix: 1/2 cup baking soda, 1 cup borax, and 1 cup cornmeal. Sprinkle the mixture onto the stain, rub with a cloth, and allow it to sit for several hours or overnight if possible. Vacuum it up and your carpet will be clean. For larger carpet spills sprinkle just the cornmeal over the carpet, allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes and then vacuum it up.
So the next time that you head out to the grocery store make sure you stock up on this little gem and don’t worry too much about whether you should get yellow cornmeal or white. I have found that either works just as well although I lean a little more toward the yellow. Also don’t forget that if you need to deodorize your entire carpet sprinkle in a little baking soda with that cornmeal and vacuum. That way you get a clean looking and smelling carpet with very little work.

Home and House Ideas: Baking Soda and Vinegar
|
Walk down the the cleaning supply aisle of your local store and you will notice there are dozens of different cleaners. Many of those chemicals are harsh and apart from what they do to the planet, the effects they have on your body can be fatal. If you have small children you have to make sure they are kept out of reach and the smell is awful. Did you know that two of the best cleaners are safe and found right in your grocery store? In fact you may even already have them in the house.
Baking soda and vinegar are the two items you need at all times. Mixed together they make a cleaner that will rival many of the name brand chemicals. Baking soda not only cleans but it also deodorizes, softens water, and scours. While vinegar cuts grease, removes mildew and odors as well some stains and wax build-up. If you want to use them alone allow the baking soda to sit and then add a little water before scrubbing. Vinegar can be added to a sponge and then used. When using together mix a paste (be careful not to mix too much–remember the volcano from school.) No smells, no chemical residue!

House and Home Ideas Series: New carpet
|
When buying new carpet and having it put in your house be sure to get everything in writing and make sure the details are clear. I’m sure any of you reading this know that, but it is easy to let some things slip by.
When we had new carpet put in a few years ago I thought I had it all organized and set up right, etc. We bought the carpet from a large home improvement store whose name I won’t mention, but I’ll say I wasn’t impressed I wouldn’t get carpet from them in the future. Part of the problem was that while the store sold the actual carpet, they outsourced everything else. The people they outsourced to weren’t that competent and I think information didn’t passed to the right people correctly either.
I was told by someone in the store that there would be no problem with the people installing it to move the furniture out of the room. Well, there was. They said they couldn’t move any furniture. I certainly couldn’t move it, it was way too big and heavy for me. I had to call my husband at work and he had to leave and come home and move all the furniture out by himself.
And the person that had came some days ahead of time to measure the room, apparently measured it wrong. The installers had to put a seam in where they shouldn’t have had to. The measuring person was from a different outsourced company than the people installing too, just to be more confusing, and had told me that the installers could move all furniture except electronics. So my husband had moved the TV, etc. but that was all.
In general it was a bad experience that could have been avoided if I had double or triple checked on all the details and had everything in writing.

House and Home Ideas: Air conditioner maintenance
|
In much of the U.S. it is extremely hot right now. Personally, I feel bad for people without an air conditioner and can’t imagine how they endure the heat. But for those that do have air conditioning you still need to make sure that it is properly maintained. Remember to keep the condensing unit (the part outside of your house) free from debris like leaves or other plant matter and to change the filter on a regular schedule.
It is also a good idea to have it inspected each spring by an air conditioning specialist who should check the coils, electrical parts, thermostat and freon levels.
The expense of having it checked each year outweighs the costs of bigger repairs or unit replacement – which might be needed if problems aren’t caught early – for most people.

House and Home Ideas: Cleaning candle wax from furniture or carpet
|
Yes, we’ve had candle wax – dark green candle wax – spilled on our light tan carpet. We were expecting an important guest and were cleaning and lit a candle to try and make sure we got rid of any unwanted odors. I’m not even sure how it happened now, but somehow we managed to spill a bunch of hot wax on the carpet. We didn’t know what to do!
What we should have done is cut a piece of a paper grocery bag and laid it over the spill and then ironed over it with a steam iron. Do it repeatedly with new pieces of paper bag until no more wax comes off.
Instead we had a green stain on our carpet for a long time. Live and Learn!

House and Home Ideas: Hanging heavy things on your walls
|
If you want to hang something from your walls that is relatively heavy – more than 35-45 pounds, for example, you want to be careful to do it correctly. Make sure the hangers are nailed directly into the studs to be safe. An even better idea is to make a bridge connecting two studs on the wall with small piece of wood, then attach the object you want to hang to the bridge.

House and Home Ideas: Do you need a new roof?
|
We had to have a new roof put on our house a couple of years ago. Not a fun experience – having to find a trustworthy roofing company, deciding on the type of roof and dealing with the noise and mess (we still occasionally find a nail that was left behind).
A roof should last around 20 years before needing to be replaced, depending upon the climate where you live and some other factors. You don’t want to replace it unless you really need to – don’t let someone talk you into a new one if you don’t need it.
Signs that you may need a new roof include missing shingles, ceiling spots, algae growth, and buckling.
