Homeschool Series: What Age To Start Homeschooling
|
You have made the decision to homeschool your children but at what age should you start homeschooling? Is there a certain age that is too young to begin structured learning? The truth is as long as you are within the requirements of the law within your state the age you begin is up to you.
Many parents begin to homeschool at around the preschool school age while some start a little younger. There are others who begin teaching their children from birth. You need to consider your child’s temperament, their learning abilities, and your own abilities. Teaching preschool aged children takes a lot of patience, so would it be better for you and your child to begin learning a little each day a year or two before they are preschool age?
Ask other homeschooling parents you know what ages they began but be prepared. There are strong opinions on both sides (starting early and waiting) of this issue. What you are wanting is to gain the knowledge and information you need, such as why they began early or late so that you can make the best decision for you and your family. Don’t get pressured into starting earlier than you are prepared to or later when you are left trying to play catch up.
