NYC Teen Pregnancy Rate Down 27% Thanks To Plan B
|
Two years ago, the New York City public schools began a pilot program to provide contraception to high school students. They gave away condoms, made birth control available, and provided Plan B to students for free.
And something curious happened.
It wasn’t that the teen pregnancy rate plummeted 27%. Although that by itself is wonderful and good. It was that all that access to contraceptives, all that comprehensive sex education… it reduced the number of teens having sex.
It seems that providing safe, real world options to the consequences of sex makes those consequences seem more real. More frightening and serious.
Compared to abstinence only education, which leads to MORE teen pregnancy, it’s fairly easy to draw conclusions.
Conclusions like, teenagers aren’t all hormones charge sex maniacs, and access to information empowers them to make better choices.
Let’s hope the rest of the country starts following this example and takes proactive steps to reduce teen pregnancy. Steps like making honesty and practicality a priority over protecting the delicate sensibilities of parents who can’t bear the thought of their kids turning into adults. All children become adults. It’s when they don’t that it’s a tragedy.
Let’s prepare them for adulthood properly.

Texas “Education”
|
You all probably remember the law passed in Texas a few years ago that completely undermined the foundations of science education in that state. It allowed teachers to throw out lessons about evolution, and gave teachers permission to breach all sorts of constitutional laws regarding the separation of church and state. To give you an idea of what undermining public education like this can do, I give you some excerpts from the 2011 textbook, “Reading, Writing, and Religion II.”
“The Bible is the written word of God… The Bible is united in content because there is no contradictions in the writing [sic]. The reason for this is because the Bible is written under God’s direction and inspiration.”
“Giving God his rightful place in the national life of this country has provided a rich heritage for all its citizens.”
“Christ’s resurrection was an event that occurred in time and space — that it was, in reality, historical and not mythological (cf. 2 Pet. 1:16).”
“Survival of the Jewish nation is one of the miracles of history and her greatest agony is yet to come.”
“The first time the Lord gathered his people back was after the Babylonian captivity. The second time the Lord will gather his people back will be at the end of the age.
“Sad to say mainstream anti-God media do not portray these true facts [of Moses and the Red Sea crossing] in the light of faith but prefer to sceptically [sic] doubt such archaeological proofs of the veracity & historicity of the Biblical account, one of the most accurate history books in the world[.]”
And that is what a public education will teach you in Texas.

National American Indian Heritage Day
|
Yesterday was Thanksgiving.
For the majority of Americans, it was an opportunity to engage in a the traditional kitsch of a national holiday. School children dressing up as “Pilgrims” and “Indians,” turkeys and buckled hats adorning doors, windows, and lawns, and a gigantic feast, representing the first Thanksgiving meal- the union of the natives and the puritans, coming together to celebrate a successful harvest.
The reality is, sadly. very different. The truth is that shortly before the colonists arrived at New Plymouth. a plague had ravaged the native population, destroying entire villages. The truth is that Squanto, friend of the pilgrims, had been sold into slavery in Spain, and managed to return to him home to find everyone he knew was dead. The truth is that Squanto found the pilgrims essentially squatting in the ghost villages of his people, surviving by picking the food off the overgrown and untended farms of the natives, and dying of disease and starvation.
Squanto helped them, he taught them to farm and hunt in New England, to survive the harsh winters. He helped them communicate with the surviving Pequot and Wampanoag people. The first Thanksgiving was, as has been fabled, natives and pilgrims both bringing food to the table, but the food the pilgrims brought was the food of Squanto.
Just a few short years after this Thanksgiving, the Pilgrims massacred Squanto’s people. They mercifully waited until after his death, but nonetheless the story of the puritans and the natives is not a happy one.
So take a moment today to think about the native peoples of this land, the peoples who have been abused and neglected since the time Europeans first colonized this soil. Think about them today, and give more than thanks. Ask forgiveness for our sins, sins that yesterday we gathered to celebrate.

100 Years of Girl Scouts
|
100 years ago yesterday, Juliette Gordon Low began a program to provide girls with the chance to become involved in their communities. More than that, she taught her scouts skills that were, at the time, almost radical. She presented sports, outdoorsmanship, and first aid to her scouts, and immediately they began to flourish.
It was barely more than a decade later that troops began opening their arms to African American girls, shortly thereafter to young Latinas, and in the 1940s the Girl Scouts began establishing troops in Japanese internment camps. In 1956, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called the Girl Scouts, “a force for desegregation.”
The Girl Scouts of America have always stood for diversity and acceptance, regardless of what might be popular. Today, the GSA have been getting a lot of criticism for welcoming transgendered girls into their ranks. But they stand by Juliette Gordon Low’s vision- that every girl, regardless of how worthy or valuable her society might see her- is welcome to join a troop and to learn.
So today the Girl Scouts embark on their 101st year. Congratulations, Girl Scouts of America. Congratulations, scouts everywhere.
And thank you, for always remembering to live by the words of the Girl Scout Law- “I will do my best… to make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.”

2011 and the War on Women- Part Two
|
2011 has been the harshest in memory when it comes to attacks on the rights of women in the United States. Here are a few more highlights of the last year:
In October of 2011, House Republicans passed the bizarrely named “Protect Life Act,” which quickly became known in pro-Choice circles as the “Let Women Die Act.” The bill allows any hospital that receives federal funding (that’s pretty much every hospital, by the way) to turn away women in need of abortion care, even if that care is in order to save her life.
While the Mississippi amendment to redefine a fertilized egg as a human being failed (thank God), the personhood movement gained serious momentum. There are similar measures pending in states across the nation, and several of the Republican presidential candidates support a similar federal amendment. This sort of legislation would make many forms of birth control, including the nearly ubiquitous pill, illegal. It would also ban IVF, stem cell research, and the morning after pill. It would also mean that any woman who suffered a miscarriage could be charged with any number of crimes, from criminal negligence to murder.
In Ohio, there has been a great deal of success for the Republican initiative to pass a so-called “Heartbeat Bill,” which would be the most restrictive anti-abortion bill in the country. It would ban abortions following the detection of a heartbeat- which can occur as soon as six weeks after conception. that means that by the time most women knew they were pregnant, an abortion would be illegal.

And End to Photoshopped Beauty Ads?
|
This day is long overdue.
If you were paying very, VERY close attention to beauty ads a few weeks ago, you might have noticed some CoverGirl mascara ads featuring Taylor Swift.
Yes, her eyelashes looked quite full and luscious. But at the bottom of the ad in tiny tiny prints was the note that this picture had been photoshopped.
Which leads somebody to wonder… ARE those eyelashes full and luscious? Is that even really Taylor Swift?
The National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau has, thanks to this ad, finally taken a stance of photoshop in advertisement. They have made Proctor and Gamble pull the ad, and furthermore agree never to run photoshopped mascara ads again.
It’s a start. Finally, a precedent is being set- advertisers can’t claim to have a product to make you look “like this” when the image in question is not capable of existing in the first place. Photoshopping models thinner, eyelashes thicker, and skin smoother (or another color entirely) may soon be a thing of the past.
Well… we can certainly hope.

For Christmas, Don’t Give the Gift of Child Labor
|
Thinking of giving yourself or somebody else goods from Victoria’s Secret for Christmas?
Recently, Bloomberg Markets published a report on the cotton that Victoria Secret uses for its lingerie. 12 and 13 years olds labor in the cotton fields all day, being whipped and beaten, to harvest the cotton that becomes Victoria Secret bras and panties.
These children are essentially slaves. They live on the farms, sleeping on plastic mats instead of beds, toiling all day long. All so that Victoria Secret can bring you the newest “Pink” products.
If you have purchased any Victoria’s Secret lingerie for Christmas, take it back! Let them know that you don’t support child labor, and that until Victoria’s Secret stops doing business with farms that abuse children, your pantie pennies are going elsewhere.
And instead, give a charitable donation in the name of the would-be recipient for a cause that supports either children OR women. Because, it seems, Victoria’s Secret doesn’t support either.
While it might not be very sexy to give somebody a charitable donation in their name, it IS sexy to know when your holiday dollars are going to support good will towards men and peace on earth, or child slave labor. And whoever you were getting that bra from, they’ll be honored that you’re doing good in their name for Christmas.

Marvel Heroines and Breast Cancer Awareness
|
A new ad campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness has hit Mozambique, and already other countries the world over- including this one- are hoping to get in on it.
Marvel artists drew their most famous heroines performing self exams, with the warning that nobody is immune to breast cancer.
The message is double- First, that breast cancer can affect anyone- regardless of their personal strength. The second message is that superheroines are proactive about educating themselves and defending themselves against cancer.
While self breast checks are not the best way to detect breast cancer (they are likely to turn up benign but palpable cysts, while not showing small but cancerous ones), taking the initiative to educate yourself is important. Becoming familiar with your body, in order to be aware of any potentially dangerous changes in it is important.
Most important of all in the fight against breast cancer is regular mammograms. While more public and invasive then the self breast exam, mammograms can detect cancer early. And that is vital.
Still, superheroines raising awareness for breast health? Let’s hope we start seeing these ads here!

Can a Six Year Old be a Sexual Predator?
|
A six year old boy in Wisconsin is being charged with sexual assault for playing doctor.
Here are the facts- the little boy had a medical exam that included a rectal exam. He then played with a five year old girl and her little brother, and this little girl’s mother walked in on them playing, “butt doctor.”
Yes, it sounds silly and awkward. But the mother is claiming that the little boy sexual assaulted her child. While the little boy denies the allegations, the little girl’s mother claims that he put his finger inside her daughter’s anus.
Now, whether or not this last part is true, there is a need for the parents involved to teach their children about boundaries- about okay touching and touching that is not okay. Children having been playing “doctor” since they’ve been getting medical exams, just as they play at “babies” and “cooking” and “guns.” It’s a natural way that they deal with confusion and curiosity in their own lives.
So, is a little boy who plays an inappropriate game of “butt doctor” with another child a sexual predator? I think not. I think he’s a little boy in need of some lessons from his parents. And even if it’s true that he did attempt a rectal exam on that little girl, it was not with malicious or sexual intent. It was out of curiosity and confusion. Qualities that all healthy children share.

Finally- A Feminist Princess Movie
|
Women of my generation have been fighting an intense internal battle their entire adult lives. On the one hand, they love the Disney Princesses of their childhood. We fondly remember singing with Ariel, feeling like Belle *got us* because of her love of books, laughing at the endless antics of anthropomorphic sidekicks. But at the same time, we are aware of the deep sexism that plagues these movies. Women as currency, women who’s only asset is beauty, women in constant danger of abuse.
The Princess generation grew up, became empowered women, and began griping that there were no feminists in Princess movies. When Fiona came along (as a parody, mind you), it was refreshing. But not enough.
But now? Finally? This summer, Pixar (how did we know it would be Pixar?) is releasing its first Princess movie. Optimistically titled, “Brave,” it’s the story of a Scottish Princess who abandons her duties as a Lady to seek adventure- as an archer.
What makes this movie so much better than Mulan? Mulan’s heroic actions are shaming to her family. Even after succeeding- rescuing all of China from the Huns- the only way she really brings honor to her family is by presumably marrying the well connected army commander.
But Brave looks like the one we’ve been waiting for- a girl actualizing her destiny, who’s attractiveness is irrelevant to her story. A story of a girl who HAPPENS to be a Princess, but who can be a hero. The fact that she’s also a marketable princess is just icing on the merchandising cake.
