Be The Change Friday: The League of Women Voters
|
Once again, election fever is upon us. And this year there are GOP led efforts all over the country to restrict voting access.
But voting is not only a right, it is our most important duty as citizens. It is therefore essential that we do all within our power to help people make it to the polls.
One organization that is dedicated to voting access is the League of Women Voters.
There are Leagues all over the country. You don’t have to be a woman to join, and you don’t have to hit the pavement and register voters if you do join. The work that the League does is a universal good.
Consider becoming a member of your local League. Consider donating. And no matter what- make your voice heard.
VOTE.

Congratulations! If you’re in Arizona, You’re Pregnant!
|
A week ago today, the most ridiculous abortion law in the country went into effect.
By the terms of this new law, pregnancy is measured, not by the date of conception, but by the start of your menstrual cycle. That means that until your next period starts, you are already counting down the days until you are no longer allowed to have an abortion.
This law is an attempt to restrict abortions starting earlier than in any other state- 18 weeks. Now, 20 weeks is when most women get the ultrasound that can reveal fatal defects in their babies. But by the terms of this law, women would have to face carrying a baby to term only to watch it die.
What’s more, this provides an excuse for keeping women from all sorts of activities. Unless you prove you’re not pregnant, drinking, mountain climbing, racing cars… all sorts of activities could soon be labeled “child endangerment.”
Abortion restrictions are a slippery slope. Once somebody decides that all women are pregnant until proven otherwise, it’s just a matter of time before mandatory pregnancy tests at bars (as is in the works in Minnesota) or to gain employment.
Women, you are PEOPLE. You have rights. You are not merely a baby machine to be regulated.
Stand up for yourselves. Stand up for each other.

Ann Romney Speaks for Women
|
Last night, Ann Romney spoke at the Republican National Convention.
She was not the only woman on the agenda. But she was the most eagerly anticipated. And the one who is meant to be the surrogate voice of her husband… which is to say, the voice of the campaign.
And although she could not directly address the war on women without bringing very unwanted attention to it, she did address women in America.
Women in America. ”We’re the mothers. We’re the wives. We’re the grandmothers. We’re the big sisters. We’re the little sisters and we are the daughters.” In fact, the only working women she mentioned were moms who might love their jobs, but just want the economic freedom to spend more time with their kids.
This is who the GOP thinks women in America are. What about the mothers who stay at home out of economic necessity? The women who have no interest in motherhood? Or in marriage?
And once again, Ann Romney spoke about her time with Mitt in a “basement apartment.” The time she has previously explained as living off of Mitt’s stock portfolio, managed by his father.
Ann Romney speaks for American women, who she sees as being like her. Privileged, but sympathetic. Motivated, but mostly by domestic roles. Women who have been defined for their entire adult lives as being somebody’s wife, and being somebody’s mother.
That is a fine thing, for Ann Romney. But the majority of American women have spent the last few generations working for more. To be more than the “good woman” behind every “good man.” More than the “better half.” They have been fighting for an equality that Ann Romney does not understand.
To be a wife and a mother is a wonderful thing. But it is not the only thing. We women have a value aside from our roles as the caretakers to men.
We do not exist only to make things better for others. We must make things better for ourselves.

Rape Victims, the GOP Feels Your Pain
|
The GOP knows all about rape. They know that it is, as Paul Ryan said, just “another method of conception.” They know that you must feel terribly embarrassed and ashamed.
After all, they’re ashamed of you.
So says GOP senate candidate Tom Smith. When he was asked about Todd Akin’s incredibly offensive comments, his response was to tell the reporter that he had been through “something similar.”
What could that have been? Was he physically violated? Molested? Abused?
No. His daughter got pregnant out of wedlock. When the reporter attempted to clarify, Smith responded, “Put yourself in a father’s position. Yes, it’s similar.”
Right- being embarrassed that your daughter chose to have consensual sex before marriage is “similar” to having your body violated by another person.
Knowing that your daughter has been abused, both physically and psychologically, that she was raped, that’s similar to knowing that she accidentally got pregnant while out making her own choices.
Tom Smith knows nothing of the pain of being the victim of sexual assault. He knows only the shame of a daughter who did not conform to his ideals- who did not wait until marriage for sex. But even then, he is vindicated that she not only eschewed birth control, but also chose to keep the baby.
So of course, having a grandchild as the result of an unmarried and consensual act is just like being raped and left pregnant. Absolutely.
Women- this is how little the GOP thinks of you.

Paul Ryan Is Lying to You
|
Last week, Paul Ryan had an interview about a few controversial issues. While talking about women’s reproductive rights, he claimed that he and Mitt Romney had no interest in restricting contraceptives. Actually, what he said was, “Nobody is proposing to deny birth control to anybody.”
This was a defense of his entire party, and it was a flat out lie.
As we speak, the state of Texas is trying desperately to eliminate services that provide access to birth control. In the last year alone, nearly half of all women’s health clinics in Texas have closed. However, almost none of the closed clinics were Planned Parenthood, so the state is attempting to stop Planned Parenthood directly.
That is absolutely somebody attempting to deny birth control to somebody else.
What’s more, both Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney have said they would (and Ryan actually has) support a “personhood” law that would define a human life as starting at conception. Because of the way most hormonal birth control works, this would effectively ban it. And that is definitely somebody attempting to deny birth control to somebody else.
Do you really want the leadership of this country to be men who can’t even be honest when using the vaguest terms possible?

Reality Has a Liberal Bias
|
The fact of the matter is that the GOP platform is poison, and even the GOP knows it.
In their desperation to find a location in a state like Florida to hold their convention, they picked Tampa. Tampa, a city well run and organized enough to handle the chaos that is the RNC. And delegates entering Tampa will be treated to a view of a new billboard that informs them that the city of Tampa is entirely run by Democrats.
They have also put their convention right in the path of an oncoming hurricane- which, while not expected to be severe, is likely to disrupt the convention. Of course, the disruptions would be increased exponentially if, as the GOP wants, disaster preparedness and relief efforts have their funding slashed.
Everything that the GOP is attempting to do is bad for living things in the United States. They have an incredible propaganda machine, run by their own idea-men at Fox News, but they must constantly strive to distort reality. This is because reality? It has a liberal bias. In reality, things are not black and white, right and wrong. In the real world, not every dollar the government spends is waste. In reality, not every fetus becomes a human being. In reality, regulations on industry saves lives, and regulation of industry protects the public.
The only people that the leaders of the Republican party are trying to help are themselves. And the people of the United States need to take a stark look at their lives and decide whether they can really live in the GOP fantasy land, or if it’s better to actually deal with the problems that exist here. In the real world.

GOP Extremism is the New Normal
|
The GOP is putting together its official platform. And it is terrifying.
Included is likely to be the plan to constitutionally ban abortion, based on the idea that a fertilized egg is a human being.
This is a terrible thing. It leaves no room for exceptions- for victims of rape, or incest, or women who’s lives are at risk due to pregnancy or childbirth.
It could ban birth control. It could ban fertility treatments. But the one thing it is certain not to do is end abortion.
Women have always and will always attempt to terminate unwanted pregnancies when their situations are dire enough. The only question is whether or not the women who attempt will face death as a consequence of their actions.
And who can claim a respect for life that does not respect the life of woman who’s personhood can be beyond doubt?
The GOP, that’s who. To them, women are second class citizens, unworthy of equal pay. Unworthy of equal protection. Unworthy of equal rights.
It is not the job of the government to tell a woman that she must carry an embryo until it becomes a fetus, and then until it becomes a baby. That is between the woman, her doctor, and her own situation.
Small government indeed.

Why the Todd Akin Mess Really Matters
|
Rep. Todd Akin made some astoundingly ignorant and offensive comments. But perhaps, the most offensive term that he used was the term “doctor” used to describe the people who taught him all the nonsense he spewed about “legitimate” rape and the female body’s ability to repel conception if you rape her enough.
One of those men is Dr. John Willke. He actually believes this stuff, but he’s more than just an idiot, he’s dangerous. He’s the former president of the national Right to Life committee. He’s not just a conservative whack job, he’s one of THE conservative whack jobs.
And he’s a friend of Mitt Romney’s. That’s right, in 2008 he was a major endorser of Mitt Romney for president.
Another of Akin’s so-called experts in the field of rape science is the Rev. D. James Kennedy. This guy is the author of all sorts of books with titles like, “Abortion: Myths and Realities” in which he claims that women who get abortions are just “hysterical, ” and “Life: An Inalienable Right” in which he claims that women are responsible for being raped. He also says that husband should make reproductive choices for their wives, and that we should “rebuild America based on the Bible.”
These men are not just Todd Akin’s political and philosophical mentors. These are major players in the development of the new, insanely backwards Republican party. The party that Reagan would never recognize. The party that doesn’t care about saving the government money so long as the government isn’t spending it to help people. The party that cares more about what goes on in a woman’s body than what goes on in the town square.
These beliefs are becoming part of the party platform- including banning abortion in the case of rape or incest, as per these lunatics’ baseless claims.
Akin did not misspeak. He actually spoke what he believes- what Paul Ryan believes, and likely what Mitt Romney believes. These men are dangerous. Remember that come November.

The Big Bad Michigan Abortion Bill is Back
|
Michiganders, start making phone calls.
As early as today, legislators in Michigan can bring back the incredibly controversial abortion bill that was shelved a few months ago.
Do you remember female members of the Michigan legislature being banned for using words like, “vagina?” For, as the male GOP legislators said, throwing “temper tantrums?” This is the bill that was under debate. A bill that would not only ban abortions in the case of rape or incest, but would also use TRAP laws to essentially shut down every clinic that provides abortions in the state.
The Michigan GOP is hoping to strike while nobody is looking. This bill had been tabled until next month, and the public outcry had died down.
However, there is a little hope. After Rep. Akin’s horrific words over the weekend, it is possible that the Michigan GOP might back down again. It is not the job of politicians do decide what a woman can and can’t decide regarding her body and her doctor. And the claims by anti-abortion activists regarding those choices have as much basis in reality and fact as Akin’s claims that a woman’s body somehow repels conception in the event of “legitimate” rape.
Stay vigilant, Michiganders. And women everywhere, make phone calls, talk to your friends and families… make sure that everyone you know understands how much is at stake this November.
Your personal freedoms, women of America. Your bodily autonomy. Your protections under the law. Vote to save them, and to remove those who would harm you from office.

What You Should Know About Todd Akin
|
Rep. Todd Akin is an important guy. He’s the Republican running against Sen. Claire McCaskill, and a central part of the GOP’s plan to take over the senate.
Yesterday morning he made a few very disturbing comments during a radio interview. What he said, while defending his stance against abortion in the case of rape, was that during “legitimate rape” women’s bodies prevent conception.
First of all, “legitimate rape” is a phrase he is very familiar with, as he has been behind GOP efforts to redefine “rape” as “forcible rape,” “legitimate rape,” or “true rape.” Which is to say, it only counts if you scream and fight and fail.
Then there’s the idea that there are all sorts of “illegitimate” rapes. Which makes sense for Todd Akin, because he has been behind bills that redefined “spousal rape,” because he believed that having rape be acceptable grounds for divorce would be “messy.”
And then, of course, there’s the fact that there is no sense or logic whatsoever to the idea that somehow, magically, a woman wouldn’t conceive during a rape. That is simple nonsense- like the basis of most of his other policies.
But perhaps the most telling thing of all is the language of his so-called apology… ”As a member of Congress, I believe that working to protect the most vulnerable in our society is one of my most important responsibilities…”
That right- women. We are “the most vulnerable,” we are in need of protection, we are incapable of taking care of or making decisions for ourselves. It’s the same offensive paternalistic rhetoric that racists use to imply their own superiority. Women are “most vulnerable,” and he will take care of us.
Screw that. Women of Missouri, go to your polls and get this monster out of your congressional seats.
