The War on Women: Iowa Front
|
Iowa Governor Terry Brandstad is having a bit of a problem pushing his agenda. You see, his agenda is an illegal ban on abortion care. On completely legal healthcare for women.
As he pushes more and more restrictions on abortion access, the Iowan courts and people are pushing back. So he is resorting to less and less ethical methods of forcing this illegal ban onto his state.
Last week, Gov. Brandstad nominated his second choice for a position on the state Medical Board. This board licenses doctors, including those who would perform abortions, and is involved in the process when anti-choice activists file complaints against abortion providers. It gives its members a fair amount of political power over this one extremely divisive issue.
His first choice failed because she was so obviously and radically biased. She was Colleen Pasnick, an anti-choice activist with ties to groups and individuals who bombed a Californian abortion clinic some years ago.
His new choice?
A Catholic priest.
Because domestic terrorists and priests have a place to play on a state medical board, obviously.
This is no place to play politics, and this move is dangerous. A medical board should be staffed with MEDICAL experts. Not with people who have a set political agenda. There is no place in medicine for this kind of political maneuvering.
