Single Motherhood Is Not A Crime

About half of all marriage ends in divorce. With or without children.
And regardless of marital status, states are terrible at enforcing the payment of child support. Just ask any single mom, does the dad pay his child support? In full? On time?
Well, if you’re a deadbeat dad in Iowa, now you might have the perfect excuse not to pay.
Republican State Senator Mark Chelgren has a wonderful idea. If you’re the parent paying child support, you should be able to make the other parent- you know, the one who is responsibly sticking around for their children and trying to raise them without you- pass a drug test before receiving child support.
Never mind that, statistically speaking, the parent with the children is more likely to be drug free and socially responsible. No, if you are a single mother you should have to humiliate yourself to the father of your children- the man who left you and his life’s greatest responsibilties.
This is punishing single mothers, pure and simple. Punishing them for the crime of having children alone, when that is an awesome burden and responsibility.
A woman does not need a husband to be a good mother. And a single mother seeking child support from the father of her children isn’t looking for a handout. She is a responsible adult, and treating her as anything but is an insult to women everywhere.

Family law in this nation universally favors the mother. While I admit some men leave, some are pushed out by archaic laws that believe all mothers have their children’s best interest at heart first. This proposal is a vain one – I’ve had family lawyers tell me that a mother could walk into a courtroom with a needle in her arm, she would still be granted custody and the child support because family law says so.
Accountability would be nice in the cases where a demonstrated potential for misspent funds exists. Example, mother spends half of her take home pay in gambling habit over 2 year period. Would you really trust 20% of your salary going to this person to be spent properly? But until a law exists that says custody could be lost on these grounds, what’s the point of having the accountability?

Absolutely agreed!!! It’s time we vote out those who think single motherhood is anything but a crime. Oftentimes, we don’t choose to be a single mother. So don’t brand us as “criminals”!!! because we are NOT.
