Sympathy for Santorum?
|
Former Senator Rick Santorum is returning from a break today, and heading back onto the campaign trail.
Why did he take a weekend off as the Florida primary looms nearer and nearer? Because his daughter is in the hospital, recovering from pneumonia. His youngest child suffers from a condition call Trisomy 18, which causes congenital heart failure.
Senator Santorum is very lucky. His daughter is recovering well, and he was able to be with her at the hospital during her illness.
Part of me wants to express my sympathies to the Santorum family for what they have been going through, but I can’t do it in good conscience because all of the things that give the Santorum family comfort and hope for Bella’s recovery are things that Rick Santorum is campaigning to DENY to other families.
He wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which allows families to get the medical treatment to help a child like Bella survive to three years old, let alone combat an additional illness.
He wants to deny the rights of homosexual couples to visit their children or each other in the hospital.
He wants to keep loving couples from having children in the first place. He wants to dissolve their marriages.
The only thing he is not trying to institutionalize out of reach of other families is the ability to find comfort in faith.
It is very sad that the Santorum family is going through this difficult time. But I wish they would open their hearts and feel some compassion for families that struggle with these problems every day, and maybe realize that the platform of hate and exclusion upon which Rick Santorum is running hurts families very much like his own. Especially in a time like this.

Muslim Woman who Reported Sexual Harassment Falsely Accused of Terrorism
|
Balayla Ahmad enrolled in college in order to build a better life for herself. As an African American Muslim woman, she sort of stuck out a little bit. Always in her hijab, it was obvious to her fellow students that she practiced the Islamic faith.
Just as obvious was that she was a woman. And, unfortunately, being a woman in the United States carries with it a lot of consequences.
Almost immediately, a fellow student began sexually harassing Ahmad. He made her life terrifying and miserable. She reported him to everyone she could imagine might help- professors urged her to say nothing and let it go. She reported the harassment to the dean and the president. The dean claimed there was nothing he could do.
Finally, news of her reports- as useless as they had been- got back to the student harassing her. He decided to punish her still further for being a woman and a Muslim. He reported her to the FBI for terrorism. And the University of Bridgeport, rather than investigate the claims of either student, simply expelled her.
She has been forced to deal with interrogations by the FBI, in addition to losing her access to education.
Her law suit against her accuser, and the man who mercilessly sexually harassed her, is pending.

Be The Change Friday- A New Kind of Blood Banking
|
Most of us are aware of the importance of donating blood. And many of us are aware of the possibilities to help others through the use of stem cells. And some of us know about the possibilities of combining the two through cord blood donation.
However, a new kind of blood banking is just around the corner.
Earlier this month, researchers discovered that there are active stems cells in menstrual blood. That’s right, that thing that happens to women once a month, that they generally consider an annoyance or an embarrassment is actually a source of lifesaving cells. As it turns out, the uterus is full of regenerating cells, and in the process of shedding its lining produces more new cells- stem cells, that can become almost any other kind of tissue.
Almost as soon as this research came out, the world’s first Menstrual Blood Bank opened. Right now the recommendation is for women to bank menstrual blood for themselves, as no person’s stem cells are going to be as perfect a match as their OWN stem cells. But presumably, soon women world over will be able to share their life saving cells with each other.

The New Hampshire GOP v. Planned Parenthood
|
It’s happening again. Planned Parenthood is facing discrimination from GOP lawmakers for providing services not related to their government funding.
The New Hampshire state legislature has been considering legislation that would bar Planned Parenthood from entering into any contract with the Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. The New Hampshire House sent the bill to committee, and the committee agreed 12-5 that this was a bad idea. In New Hampshire, abortion care only makes up about 3% of the Planned Parenthood services. For the most part, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England provides cancer screenings, care for sexually transmitted diseases, physicals for employment and sports, birth control, and gynecological examinations. And these services it provides mostly benefits a largely poor clientele.
Yet, the House rejected the recommendations of the committee, which was made up of 13 Republicans and 5 Democrats.
This isn’t the New Hampshire legislature’s first attempt to oust Planned Parenthood. Last year they voted to reject a contract with PPNNE, and the contract was reverted back to the Federal level. Then, it was eventually awarded in part to PPPNNE, because there simply wasn’t anybody else who could provide the needed health services to the people of New Hampshire.
The anti-abortion fervor in the New Hampshire GOP is hurting people, and mostly people who do not seek abortions.
The New Hampshire GOP seems in desperate need of a reality check.

10 Things I Wish A GOP Candidate Would Say
|
In case you haven’t noticed, the American political process is a gigantic circus. There are a lot of things that have happened during the primaries so far, and amazingly, no comments on them from the Republican contenders for the presidency. It would be so simple for them to say a few words on some of those events- and yet, they do not. I would like to see at least one of the candidates in the race simply say these words out loud. If it genuinely hurts their chances at winning, the US is in a much worse state than I could have imagined.
1. Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez was wrong to try to kill President Obama.
2. For the police to profile Latinos or anyone else is wrong.
3. Homosexuality is not a disease.
4. I support state’s rights (including the right of a state to allow gay marriage and abortion if that is what the voters of that state decide.)
5. Companies should not initiate hiring freezes in order to hurt the Democrats or the president- the people they’re hurting are the American public.
6. Taxes are how a government gets money.
7. I support interracial marriage.
8. An organization can do good things and still hold positions I disagree with.
9. Science has a place in American public schools.
10. Barack Obama was born in the United States of America.

Santorum’s Words of Wisdom for Victims of Rape
|
Former Senator Rick Santorum has once again made perfectly clear how little connection he has to the needs or concerns of the women of the United States. Several days ago, he said in an interview that women who have become pregnant as a result of rape have been given a gift.
Yes, yes he did.
He made sure to express that being raped is a horrible thing. Just… horrible. But that a pregnancy as a result of a rape is a blessing from God.
Not a constant reminder of a traumatic and evil thing that has been done to you.
Not a year long medical condition that anyone has any responsibility to cover you for.
No, it’s a gift.
Considering how many women are victims of sexual assault in this country, he must know several. Considering that he is he father of a special needs daughter, and women and children with disabilities are MUCH more likely to be the victim of sexual abuse, you’d think he might consider what that position would mean for his own family.
Were his mentally disabled daughter raped, and impregnanted, would he consider that a gift? His position has been that if his 20 year old daughter were raped, he would encourage her to have any baby as a result of that.
Rick Santorum, a “Conservative” with no compassion.

Gingrich Wins South Carolina- What it Means for the GOP
|
In a huge upset, former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich won Saturday’s primary in South Carolina by a huge margin. This sets the scene for a truly interesting campaign season. With Santorum winning Iowa, Romney taking New Hampshire, and Gingrich taking South Carolina, no clear frontrunner is discernible.
It forces the GOP to ask itself the questions, IS Romney the inevitable choice? Up until now, this has been the assumption. The party would go through the absurd process of weeding out every single other candidate until left with nothing but Romney, and it would be Romney versus Obama. Now, however, it seems that Romney’s victory simply isn’t a foregone conclusion.
Will the conservative base solidify behind Gingrich? Will the Christian base unite behind Santorum? Is the desperate desire for a not-Romney going to force the GOP to actually nominate somebody as blatantly insane as either of those candidates?
The worst part for the GOP is that in the course of all of this madness, each candidate vilifying the others, all Obama needs to do against any of them in the general election is to re-run the other GOP candidates’ campaign ads.
They’ll have done all the work for him.
It’s going to be a fun year.

Feminist of the Month: The Girl Scouts of America
|
Recently, a video has been making the rounds of social media sites. In it, a fourteen year old girl who claims to be a Girl Scout urges the American public to boycott Girl Scout Cookies. Why? Because of the Girl Scouts of America’s support of transgendered children.
The girl (who is wearing a uniform inappropriate to her age and devoid of merit badges) claims that the GSA “hides” transgendered girls in the scouts, and uses all sorts of offensive language in her derision of these transgendered students.
Amazingly, her source for the GSA “hiding” their transgendered members is their own press briefing. Which hardly sounds like “hiding” to me.
The GSA have stated that they accept any girl, and that theirs is a message of acceptance, tolerance, and diversity.
There are plenty of reasons to boycott Girl Scout Cookies. There is a group of Girl Scouts doing just that, but not because of any disagreement with the attitude of the GSA towards diversity or equality. They are protesting the use of palm oil in the cookies, an ingredient that is a major factor in the destruction of the rain forest. In short, they are using the skills taught to them by the GSA to do good in the world, while the girl in the viral video is using a GSA sash as a veil for bigotry and hatred.
For their support of LGBT teens and children, the Girl Scouts of America are my Feminists of the Month.

Can Santorum Take Down Romney?
|
Recently, former Senator Rick Santorum has picked up a few very important endorsements. These come from conservative Christian Evangelical movement.
This is a set of voters that the GOP candidates have been courting obsessively. Most notoriously, Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Gov. Rick Perry, and until her departure from the race Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Rick Perry has announced that he is dropping out of the race and endorsing New Gingrich. Gingrich never really had a hope of winning those endorsements in the first place. A born-again nee Catholic, thrice married and notoriously unkind, he doesn’t particularly appeal to the Christian fervor of the Evangelical right.
It was, in reality, a contest between Bachmann and Santorum. And with Bachmann gone, that made Santorum the defacto candidate for the Conservative Christians of the GOP.
Why is this important? Because this is a particularly vocal part of the GOP constituency. With the unified support of the Evangelical movement, Santorum genuinely stands a chance (not a great chance, but it’s there) of winning the Republican nomination instead of Mitt Romney.
Which is, frankly, a good thing. Let’s face it- no independent or moderate voter is going to cast a ballot for Rick Santorum. A Santorum ticket practically guarantees President Obama’s reelection. I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but…
Go Santorum!

SOPA and PIPA
|
If these acronyms don’t mean a lot to you, try looking them up on Wikipedia today.
I’ll give you minute to go ahead…
And that is what the internet will look like if this legislation is passed. It’s not just Wikipedia, either. Go check out some of your favorite websites. A lot of them are down today.
Amazingly, some of the supporters of SOPA and PIPA have denounced this protest- this blackout- as an abuse of power. Without a hint of irony. Not like the abuse of power it would take to police the internet in this way. Imagine that the internet was your phone. Essentially, the government would make it the job of the phone company to listen in on every conversation, and to shut down your service if they thought you were doing anything that might be illegal.
That’s a pretty big invasion of privacy.
I can’t help but think of Mr. Rogers. When congress was considering similar legislation, to make it illegal to record off of the television onto a VHS tape, Mr. Rogers testified in favor of making recordings. He said that there are lots of parents who can’t be home to watch his show with their kids, and that he wanted them to still be able to have that opportunity. That he didn’t feel robbed.
I stand with Mr. Rogers. I support treating the media as a public good. I oppose SOPA and PIPA. Please stand with me today- and call your legislators.
