Spreading Santorum All Over the Ladies

Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.
Rick Santorum is an anachronism at best. His truest claim to fame is the almost cosmic retribution for his infamous comment comparing homosexuality to beastiality. Dan Savage, advise columnist and activist, became so enraged that he held a contest to re-define “santorum,” as something disgusting, sexual, and at a glance most associated with homosexuality. If you’re curious, go ahead and google “santorum.” This has been referred to as the candidates “Google problem.”
Recently, Rick Santorum is doing all he can to spread the anti-Santorum sentiment not only among America’s LGBT and allied population, but among women of all stripes. Rick Santorum believes that the only reason women vote for Democrats is that they aren’t married to a nice man to take care of them.
Yes, according to the former Senator, women who vote Democrat are unwed mothers. They need a nanny state because there is no man to provide for them. But as soon as they get married and have a man calling the shots, they’ll pony up and vote GOP.
As a married female Democrat, I suppose I must have missed the memo. Now I can vote GOP, take off my shoes, abandon birth control and vote exactly as my husband dictates. Fortunately for me, he’s a Democrat too.
Rick Santorum, because the whole country should pretty much look like Topeka. Right?

Be The Change Friday- Your Local Farmers Market

Just about everything that we do has an impact on the environment. But most of us don’t realize how much of an impact buying food can have on the earth. Each trip to the grocery store, you can end up with a grocery cart that isn’t so much a selection of healthy foods as a tour across two or three continents. Tomatoes from Florida are frequently harvested using slave labor, apples make their way from coast to coast and back again, and corn syrup finds its way into everything.
Large companies use deceptive advertising and artificial ripening techniques to make our produce appear local, organic, or ripe when it is not. They use images of small farms on meats processed from animals that never saw the sun. A grocery trip can represent an incredibly huge carbon footprint, human rights violations, and all sorts of health risks. But there is a way to ensure that our foods are free of all those things.
Do your grocery shopping at a local farmers market. Contrary to popular belief, the prices at a farmers market are very much comparable to a grocery store, and in some states farmers markets even accept WIC and food stamps. You might not be able to buy your favorite brand of cereal or frozen dinner there, but at large farmers markets you can usually find homemade granola and pastas.
Farmers markets cut down the amount of fossil fuels wasted to get your food from the farm to your home, and the meat and produce you get there is going to be fresher, tastier, and more nutritious than the options at your local grocery chain.

Alabama’s Immigration Law’s Gigantic Reality Check
|
Earlier this month, Alabama passed a new set of guidelines for stopping illegal immigration. These new laws are so strict, and represent such a huge violation of civil and human rights, that a mass exodus of Latinos has been making its way out of the state. Landed immigrants, American citizens, and undocumented migrants alike have been abandoning their homes out of the fear that they could be imprisoned for simply appearing to be Latino.
This law had a great deal of GOP support. It was supposed to be good for the “American” unemployed, they could take the jobs left vacant by newly evicted immigrants.
Instead, farms all over the state are suffering. Even the unemployed Alabama residents willing to take farm jobs don’t want to do the hard labor of digging up sweet potatoes. Alabama is looking to lose as much as billions of dollars in agriculture because there is nobody to pick the crops.
The people of Alabama have very little time to come to grips with the fact that they absolutely rely on undocumented workers. And we as a nation need to understand how much we depend on people working with no benefits and incredibly long hours doing back breaking labor.
Thank you, Alabama, for proving exactly how dependent we all are on a system of marginalization and oppression. And good luck sorting that out.

Separation of Church and State? Not in Tennessee!
|
The War on Women continues. Now, ladies living in Shelby County (home of Memphis) are out of luck if they wanted sexual autonomy.
The County Commission has taken away the Title X funding previously granted to Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region, and instead have chosen to provide that money to a different provider. Although, this new provider hints that “providing” isn’t exactly its top priority.
Christ Community Health Services has explicitly stated that they will not provide abortion services. But additionally, they also promise to stop providing patients with the morning after pill. The morning after pill is not, as is commonly believed, and abortifacient. It is rather a drug that keeps a fertilized egg from implanting on the uterine wall, therefore never giving the emerging blastocyst the opportunity to even become an embryo.
What’s more, Christ Community Health Services will not simply provide reproductive health services without question. Any woman hoping to get contraceptives will have the accept the proselytizing and lecturing of the explicitly religious providers before, hopefully, being given a measure of control over their own reproductive futures.
More tax dollars going to shame women who dare to exercise their sexual autonomy. Another victory for the oppressors waging the War on Women.

Treason and the Tea Party
|
The Tea Party has been urging business owners not to hire a single person before the next presidential election.
They have been doing so not only to hurt President Obama politically, but to hurt the people of the United States.
Their idea is that if the American People are jobless, hungry, and angry, if they have no access to health care, and if they are generally worse off than they’ve ever been in their lives, they’ll blame the current administration.
This is probably true. When things are bad, people do tend to blame whoever they think is “in charge,” even if that is nothing but an illusion. But it’s not just dirty politics.
Do you know what a concerted attack against your own country is called?
Treason.
Do you know what a person who conspires to overthrow the government is called?
A traitor.
This is not just politics. This is an effort to hurt the people of the United States of America, and then to blackmail President Obama. A man who has been stymied at every turn when he has tried to help out the citizens of his country.
Let’s just hope the American People are smart enough to know where to direct their anger. At the real “people in charge,” not our elected figurehead.

Like Rats From A Sinking Ship- The Bachmann Campain
|
Another day, another nail in the coffin of Michele Bachmann’s presidential aspirations.
Last week, sources disclosed a mass exodus from Rep. Bachmann’s Vermont campaign headquarters. Five staffers out of seven abandoning the cause in search of greener pastures.
Although one would think that a campaign so rife with horse manure would keep the pastures pretty darn green.
Michele Bachmann’s spokesperson claims that these are unfounded rumors, but they represent a continuing trend of disaster for the campaign.
Who would have guessed that a woman who lied on national television about imaginary risks to potentially life saving vaccines could alienate somebody.
Who could have thought that a woman who twisted the words of our Founding Fathers to suit her own ideals could have offended anybody close to her.
Michele Bachmann has become too big of a liability even for her own supporters. Let’s all just be grateful that that doesn’t make her “too big to fail.”

Birth Control Is Not Murder
|
The group Personhood USA has succeeded in adding a terrifying initiative to the November ballot in Mississippi. Very soon, the residents of Mississippi will be voting on a measure that defines a fertilized egg as a human being. A fertilized egg, not an embryo. Not a fetus.
In many cases, a fertilized egg fails on its own to adhere to the uterine wall. But it would suddenly be a crime, committed by a woman with absolutely no control over her endometrial membranes.
This would mean that birth control pills could be considered a lethal weapon.
That miscarriage could carry a charge of murder.
That a woman could actually be imprisoned for failing to produce a child.
Whether or not you believe that abortion is murder, you cannot dispute that miscarriage is not. That a chemical pregnancy (where a fertilized egg does not implant in the uterine wall) is not a crime.
Personhood USA is attempting to get this measure on the ballot in all fifty states. Send a message now, to and for the people of Mississippi.
Support the cause. Make a donation if you can. Protect the biological freedom of women everywhere.

Rick Perry and Willful Ignorance
|
Let’s take a moment to consider the professional ethics of one of the front runners of the Republican race for President. While he’s done everything within his power to completely alienate his base, Governor Rick Perry has been hard at work fundraising. And it seems he’s very good at it. The only Republican candidate to raise more money than Rick Perry this quarter was Mitt Romney.
So what makes Rick Perry qualified for the highest office in the land? Certainly not his ethics. Never mind refusing to pardon innocent men on death row, never mind rewriting history for public school children. No, let’s just look at how he handles the simple task of passing along facts.
You see, we- the public- rely on our elected officials to tell us the truth. Did surveys find that our drinking water is contaminated? Did intelligence uncover an immediate threat to our neighborhood? Is that hurricane on its way towards us? Simple things. But vital.
Under Governor Perry’s direction, officials in Texas have removed all mention of climate change from a report on the rising sea level in Galveston, Texas, site of one of the most destructive hurricanes in our nation’s history. The changes to the report are so drastic that every single scientist who worked on the project has asked to have their names removed from the altered document.
In short, Governor Perry has no ethical qualms against plainly lying to his constituents in order to advance his platform. Exactly what someone looks for in a president.

Rep. Sally Kern Takes Homophobia to a Whole New Level
|
Generally, when we hear the term, “homophobia,” we draw several conclusions. We make assumptions about hate, about bigotry, and frequently about unacknowledged personal feelings. What we don’t actually consider is downright, irrational fear. Like fear of heights, or fear of spiders, or fear of clowns.
Rep. Sally Kerns has been working on elevating her homophobia into that pantheon.
After her outrageous statements declaring homosexuality a greater threat than terrorism, after her bizarre assertions that Obama’s recognition of LGBT rights is to blame for our country’s current economic woes, and after her claims that homosexuals are “taking over” city councils across the country, Sally Kerns has finally come out as a true homophobe.
She believes that the nation’s gay population is out to kill her.
She’s hired her own bodyguard, and Oklahoma’s law enforcement has looked over the allegedly threatening emails. However, their statement says that the messages are not death threats.
Rep. Kern, redefining homophobia for all of us.

Fun Facts about Herman Cain
|
Herman Cain, the current leader of the GOP race for the presidential nomination, is a relative unknown. To help you get to know Mr. Cain, here are a few tidbits about the man who might be the next American President.
Herman Cain wants to build an electrified fence along the entire US/Mexico border, 20 feet high, with barbed wire on the top. He wants it to be running a lethal voltage 24/7, and patrolled by servicemen using live ammunition. In short, he wants to create an automatic death sentence for anyone who attempts the misdemeanor of entering the country illegally. (He now claims that this is a joke, despite his repeated confirmation of outrageous details.)
Herman Cain has repeatedly promised not to allow any Muslims in his administration, should he become president. It’s an almost refreshing dose of acknowledged bigotry.
Herman Cain claims that Jesus was a “perfect conservative” and was killed by liberals.
Herman Cain usually refuses to answer questions about foreign policy, saying that he doesn’t know enough to comment about issues like the war in Afghanistan and our position in the Israeli/Palestinian peace process. While it’s nice to hear a candidate own up to their own incompetence, this isn’t keeping him from running without a care for his lack of qualifications.
As a businessman, Herman Cain led an illegal initiative at Aquila that tricked employees into investing with the company, and then lost their money- defrauding the shareholders. Think Enron, but smaller.
Herman Cain admits that his own 999 plan cannot work.
