There is a terrible famine surging through the horn of Africa.  Refugees have been pouring out of Somalia by the day, and they  are disproportionately women and children.

Many women tell tales of robbers who took everything- even the clothing off their bodies- as they pleaded to keep something to protect themselves and their children from the blazing sun. Then there are tales of rape, of women who walked for weeks on end only to be horribly abused.

Most importantly, many of these women are fleeing in order to seek medical care for their malnourished children.  As if malnutrition alone were not enough, the refugee hospitals have become hotbeds of common childhood illnesses.  This past week, an epidemic of measles has moved into one major Kenyan refugee hospital.

There are a few organizations that are doing a great deal of good for Somali refugees, and they are always in need of donations.

In your own communities, you can organize volunteer drives.  If you are a nursing or pumping mother, you can donate breast milk and encourage others to do the same.
